Hello, Just an introduction - I'm Cody. I generally live in the Technical Discussions for The Sims 3 and The Sims 4, where I specialise in queries relating to performance of computers in games. My background is in custom PC building, so I have quite a lot of knowledge about various computer parts. Feel free to ask me about custom building a computer - I think its an easy skill to learn, and often much cheaper than buying a pre-built system. I respond to private messages, so hit me up Keep on simming, Cody

  • Hello, Unfortunately the laptop I was going to recommend to you is currently out of stock, but hopefully it comes back in stock soon. It costs £899.99 however it has a 10% cashback deal making it £809.99.…
  • I have never heard of Freshtech - there are a number of companies which are created just to hitch onto the custom PC market in the UK. I very much doubt that they would have any decent warranty. Cyberpower Systems, PC Specialist or Scan are usually the best place for these kind of computers. I hope this helps and keep…
  • Hello, From looking at your computer, I would like to just say beforehand that for any suggestions I make, I cannot guarantee that they will be 100% compatible with your system and you may run into issues. Also, the upgrade you're discussing is fairly complicated, so I would suggest that the upgrade be done by someone with…
  • Hello, In order to recommend a graphics card that will be compatible with your computer, I'm going to need more information if possible. Could you post a DxDiag report please? Instructions on how to do so can be found here: http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/ If you are having trouble pasting…
  • In this case the Amazon description is right and that laptop does indeed have an Intel Core i5 4210H, which in it's defence is much better than the Intel U-series processors. That laptop should be able to play the game smoothly at medium-high or probably high settings though - you only really need a quad-core processor for…
  • Hello, It would probably be able to play the base game at low-medium settings, probably closer to low settings as patches are added. You might be able to run the game with some EPs, but only a couple. Thankfully this is a desktop and so an APU is less likely to overheat and be damaged by playing the game. I hope this helps…
  • Hello, I would say you should be able to play the game with all the expansions at medium settings, although you may experience some lagging issues. I hope this helps and keep simming, Cody
  • I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the Rx 300 series is made up of so many different architectures, many of which are just relabelled older architectures - the R7/R9 370 cards are relabelled R9 270 architecture, which in turn was a relabelled Radeon HD 7870 architecture, as well as having some slightly newer,…
  • To be honest, I think AMD has dug themselves into a hole here as graphics card nomenclature is already complicated and confusing for most people, and now they don't have a clear definition between their R5, R7 and R9 series cards. It would seem that Mod The Sims is less consistent and as on the ball - they haven't updated…
  • The Acer I linked above comes with a 256GB SSD and is within the OP's budget range.
  • Hello, Here is the absolute lowest I can recommend - it should be able to play the game at medium-high settings, and probably dropping to medium with expansion packs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834315015 To be sure that it would work with The Sims 4 with expansion packs, you'd probably have to…
  • Hello, I would suggest at your price point going for a laptop that has an SSD or SSHD if you can, as it will make your general computing a whole lot faster and smoother (i.e. faster boot times, quicker opening of programs), and may also make loading screens in TS3 a little bit faster. Here is a highly positively reviewed…
  • I can see why you're confused about the NVIDIA naming scheme - the first number (GTX 8xx or GTX 9xx) indicates which series the graphics card is from, with the higher number being newer, and the second number indicates how powerful the card is. So x30M and x40M are fairly low, x50M and x60M are mid-range and good for games…
  • Hello, Both TS3 and TS4 base games have the same minimum requirements, so it wouldn't be able to run The Sims 3 either. Some people have got the base game working when they didn't meet the minimum requirements, but they were extremely lucky, and you'd not be able to run any expansion packs. I'm sorry about that, Cody
  • Hello, Unfortunately your integrated Intel graphics chip does not meet the minimum requirements for the game, as it requires you to have 128MB of dedicated video memory and you only have 32MB. Therefore I doubt you'd be able to run The Sims 4. I'm sorry for this inconvenience, Cody
  • Hello, Although it depends on which expansions, that laptop should be able to play the game at low-medium settings. You may not be able to play with some of the more demanding EPs such as Pets. What is your budget? I hope this helps and keep simming, Cody
  • Unfortunately Best Buy may not give you the best deal for your money, as other stores such as Newegg tend to be cheaper. If you had to choose out of those, the i7-5500U would perform the best, however none of the Inspiron 15 5000 series that I can find have a dedicated graphics card, which is highly recommended if you're…
  • Hello, Might I suggest this ASUS desktop from Newegg CA - it should give you even better performance and is still within your budget: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883221080 I hope this helps and keep simming, Cody
  • Hello, The R9 255 graphics card is probably somewhere between a Radeon HD 7750 and Radeon HD 7770 in terms of performance, so probably should allow you to play the game at medium-high settings with most, if not all, expansion packs. What would your budget be to see if I can find a better deal? I hope this helps and keep…
  • Hello, You don't need a massive bulky gaming laptop to play The Sims 4 (although many gaming laptops are getting more lightweight), however the suggestions people are making are to almost guarantee you can play the game at the highest settings with most if not all EPs in the future. If you're happy with medium-high…
  • Amazon UK often makes mistakes in it's laptops listings. I'd be incredibly surprised if it was DDR3 as the GTX 960M only comes with GDDR5 memory as far as I know. But thanks for pointing this out (although I wouldn't say DDR3 would struggle with 1080p, but would definitely perform less well than GDDR5). Cody
  • Hello, Here would be my suggestion - one of the best quality laptops in its price range: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-15-6-Inch-Notebook-Black/dp/B00U7EN06U I hope this helps and keep simming, Cody
  • Unfortunately you cannot use the UK PC World website for buying laptops in Ireland, and the cheapest Acer Nitro in the Ireland PC World is €1,500. For reference, €900 is about equal to ~£660. EDIT: Here is an Acer Nitro model for ~€980 - this is probably the best I can recommend for max settings in TS3 with all EPs close…
  • Okay, I have modified the build based on this information, although it is now slightly over your mentioned budget. In my opinion, you do not need a GTX 970 or GTX 980 to play The Sims 3 or The Sims 4, unless you're playing at 4K resolutions. However, if you're going to be playing more demanding games (i.e. GTA V, Dragon…
  • @phoebebebe13 - I think Chester was wanting to know specific brand and model names for the motherboard and other hardware, as AMD 970 is just the chipset name and there are numerous motherboards that use this chipset. But as you rightly said, this seller seems to be using generic hardware which does not fill me with…
  • I believe the AMD TROPO XT2 is a placeholder name for a graphics card in the AMD R9 M300 series. But I agree the CPU is weak for gaming (although would yield better battery life). Cody
  • I reckon the Intel Core i5 and i7 H-series are the only dual core processors that are suitable for gaming. The Core i7 U-series processor in that laptop is definitely limited to mostly casual or browser-based games. Cody
  • Hello, Neither laptops are particularly gaming oriented, and so won't play TS4 at the highest settings. But of the two, the Macbook would probably perform ever so slightly better. I hope this helps and keep simming, Cody
  • Hello, Yes, that computer should be able to play the game with all expansions at max settings, and should have very smooth gameplay. I hope this helps and keep simming, Cody
