Haha! I usually don't write short stories because I love backstories and side plots. When it comes to side projects I don't get in depth though and it's easier to separate from it XD
I'm LOVING a lot of the submissions. I'm feeling totally insecure about mine now. So many good writers!

You should never, ever feel insecure (talk about taking my own advice...gulp). We all get to do what we love. Yes, we vote, but in the end, we still get to do what we love: create and write a story.
I've read all the stories, I think so far. I'm sure I'll catch up to those I've not read (if I haven't) at some point. I'm currently working on mine. I'm not sure why I do it, but I keep getting these ideas. lol Currently, I do not have a favorite. It'd be too hard to choose. Thankfully, I still have a little more time before I have to. lol
After writing more of the back story it has taken me to a new place. I think my whole story idea just changed, lol. I kind of love when that happens, okay not kind of, I do love when that happens
I can't read any of the submitted stories before I finish my own because I don't want to psych myself out by all the other wonderful writers. So once I have finally finished mine I will have a lot of reading to do. I am thinking that I could have this done by the end of the weekend (fingers crossed).
I never count the title when figuring out how many words I have- I always assumed that those were just for the story.
Same here... I also don't count the blurb I write at the top "This story was written as part of the monthly short story challenge..." and if I included build credits, I wouldn't include those--just the story, from the first word through the last!
@Carewren123 I hope this picture doesn't count. If it does, I'll delete it.
Thank you for giving us the option to use more pictures! The hardest for me was to choose 15 out of 50
Totally random, but every time I see you, @chealsycat , comment I see your banner and am just so intrigued. I think I'm going to crack open a bottle of Snapple and read through whatever awaits in Goldilocks and Bears. XD

Okay so far I have fleshed out my character and her background. The problem is now that I have her background in place it's hard for me to jump to the present time in her life. I want to keep exploring her past because it fascinates me. I think I just started a book instead of a short story, lol.
Then why not write the story in that past? It's clearly drawing you to explore it, so find a way to express 'a different kind of love' at that time of her life. The challenge is open enough that it could mean a love for absolutely anything, not just a romantic love. The story wants to be what it wants to be, so don't try to force it in a different direction. Go along with it!
I have written four pages of her past already. I am way past the 2,000 word count and I still don't have something that I can count as my story for this month. I am going to focus on it this weekend and get something out for submission.

Oh! Another thought would be to take a "snapshot" from her past that is somehow poignant, telling, or revealing and work that up as a short story! The long novel could still exist, and this could be just a piece from it that somehow encapsulates or points to the whole!
Thanks @Julyvee94 and everyone who helps answer questions when I'm not here to do it. (That be you @Pegasus143 and @CathyTea on the previous page about what's included in the word limit.) Seriously thanks.
Those are exactly the answers I would have given anyway.
I finished my snap shot of my characters life last night. It is written in a way that I have never done before but at one in the morning it seemed like the best way to encapsulate her life. Now I just have to figure out the pictures which means I am half way there, yay!
