I'll show you Mine, if you show me Yours: An inspiration thread!

SnowmoonSnowmoon Posts: 3,437 Member
Hello my fellow Simmers!

I have been toying with this idea for a while and I am going to try it out, so here goes:

I'll show you Mine, if you show me Yours: An inspiration thread!

That is right, I want to see what you are working on and show you some of my WIPS too. I want to see what gives you inspiration, or share with us pics/music that may inspire us!

The main purpose of this thread will be when you want to show a new WIP , get some general advice or suggestions or share a wickedly good find from the net.

To note, I do not see this thread being a step by step guide on how to build a home, we have a helpful thread for that here:

http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/279465.page

Fidleren. and those who follow his thread, are a very helpful builders and can give some straightforward advice for novice to expert. If you want help with an entire build, this would be where you want to go.

Our thread will be more of "Doh, I have building block, what do you suggest??" or "Wow, look at this dress, I want it in The Sims!"

Please note, I did say "Our" thread as I do picture this as a community thread where anyone can post and get advice or offer. While I will always try to reply, real life does call, so if I don't post, it isn't because I don't care - same goes for others. I do want to see this as an interactive exchange, so feel free to post when you want. Please do not bump just to bump, though, as I don't want anyone in trouble; a better thought would be to share a "find" if you want to bring the thread to the front.

With that said, we need to remember that not everyone is comfortable sharing and are moving out of their comfort zone by posting pics, stories or ideas. Please keep the comments fair and honest, we are looking to guide and inspire, not that I have ever seen otherwise in our Community. But, if you do not like what someone has said/posted, then keep your thoughts private - no one is forcing you to post a comment. Also remember, we have a reporting feature , so let the admins do their stuff if there is something that we cannot police.

    So, some guidelines:

    Pictures

    *Post as many as you want, but if you are posting more than 5, maybe re-evaluate what you are asking for help on - remember, we are not doing a play by play help with a build, just offering inspiration and suggestions.
    *Please do not "Quote" all of the pictures when you reply.
    *If you must quote the picture, please limit it to one. We do not want to break the thread.
    *Instead of quoting a picture, try to make a direct comment to the person like such: @Snowmoon or Snowmoon: regarding your third pic, maybe use a peach instead of yellow?
    *When you take pictures, try to make sure it is during the day or there is plenty of light.
    *In buy/build, if you press L on the keyboard, this will toggle day/night.
    *When you take pictures, please try to have the grid off. You can accomplish this two ways:
    Take pictures with a Sim on the lot (Live mode).
    When in Buy/Build, go to the terrain paint; this will turn off your grid
    *When you take pictures, try to have the walls up, but if you want to highlight one particular part, you can have the walls down.
    *When you take pictures, and want to show the floor plan, please try to zoom in, a bit, so we can get a full understanding of the layout.
    *You are free to post pictures from your Studio or any photo sharing site, but please do not just post links. To post pictures, you need the image location (right click on the photo and look for View Image Info or something similar) then put in the following html code:

    [*img]http://YourURLHere.com[*/img]

    Just remove the *'s and you are golden. We will still comment on pure links, but this is a handy feature that everyone should master.

    *Inspiration pictures are welcome, such as "Oh guys, look at this stellar kitchen! I want to build it!!" or show off cool floor plans. Again, actual images are encouraged, but feel free to share URLS/Links.

    URL/Link Guidelines:

    *Remember, this game is rated Teen, so keep it clean.
    *You can share ULRs to helpful sites, your studio, your showcases, your mom's awesome apple pie that has inspired you to make a Master Chef, music you love to build too, or any other link you think we'll like!
    *Always give a description of the Link you are posting - going blindly to a link is not always safe, so folks may not go!

    Sims, and pets and patters, oh my:

    *Yes, you can share pictures of your sims doing sim things! If it is summer and they got a sunburn, just like you, feel free to share.
    *You can also display any sims you are uploading, or just need some advise on; getting a sim just right can be hard, so another pair of eyes can be handy.

    What a great idea to make an inspiration thread, Snow!

    I kind of have builders block right now, so for now I focus on making sims. I'm currently working on two sims and would love to know what other people think. Do they look realistic?

    Project 1:
    p.s. ignore the clothes, I have not touched them yet.

    [img]http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff465/Illusie_Sims/Screenshot-45_zps2d9fe5d9.jpg "width=300"[/img]

    Now uploaded: http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=7031851

    Project 2:
    I found an old unfinished sim and decided to change her a bit. I'm not sure yet if I like her. What do you think?

    Folly, I just LOVE that site! Added it to my favourites. Thanks! *Hugs*

    Illusie, I love your sims! I like how they look! :D

    Snowmoon, this is a brilliant idea. I'm always searching for inspiration, but I usually end up finding it only when I'm not looking for it, and often in very unexpected places. To give everyone a chance to share their inspiration in one thread is great. I will definitely be lurking and hopefully also participating :D

    Illusie, I too like the way your sims look. I think they're exceptionally realistic, actually. Your Project 2 sim is great! I know you can't really judge these things based on looks alone, but she looks sophisticated and artistic to me. Love what she's wearing too.

    Hey Snow
    I have a couple links that may be useful for the "Useful Links" post

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors:_N-Z

    The first link is A-M and the second link is N-Z I use this a lot, hope that everyone else finds it helpful.

    ~~~~
    I am having trouble. I am currently experiencing a serious creativity block...I want to create so BAD but when I try it just doesn't move forward. I want to create Sims and houses.
    Does anyone have suggestions on what kind of Sims?
    I do use house plan sights when looking for building inspiration but it seems that nothing is really hitting me and making me say "OMG I need to build this house!" I am not versed in all architecture styles, Victorian, Queen Anne, Tudor etc. are not my forte. Though I am not averse to trying. I am usually not a "Stick to a certain style" builder or decorator. I usually just go with what I think looks AWESOME lol
    So any suggestions will be welcomed and tried. I will also be coming back to this thread to show what I have created based on the suggestions I have seen or been given.
    Thanks
    Amby
    Yanti68, thank you for the compliments!
    Elisabeth_Louise, thank you! I am glad to hear you find them very realistic! I always try to make them realistic (except when I make a fairy ;)). I haven´t given her a personality yet, but I´ll keep that in mind! Thanks!
    This time I was trying something new in my sims, and I am glad to hear you both think it worked out well! {hugs}
    Amby316, sorry to hear your creative flow dried up :( I´ll share some ideas with you.
    Some ideas for sims:
    - Asian sim
    - Occult (fairy, witch, werewolf, vampire, ghost, genie...)
    - Base a sim on a celebrity
    - Make stereotypical person (based on job, look or things like that)
    - Base a sim around a certain life time wish.
    - Historical sim (someone from 1800 or any time period)
    I don´t have many home ideas, but let me see...
    Maybe this is the time for you to learn to build a new style home? I´mplanning to learn how to build victorian homes and after that my next challenge will be modern homes. I know there is a victorian home building tutorial, so maybe you could try something like that as well.
    You say you usually look at floorplans for inspirations. Maybe you ca ntry something else, like a site where they offer homes for sale. Maybe you can get some inspiration there? I tried that once and it was fun :)
    You can also try to make a house for a certain occult type.
    First, thank you Snowmoon for this thread, I can see it being very helpful to a lot of Simmers. In fact the links given so far are quite interesting.
    Here's my small contribution/query, done via the most ruthless and evil Don Sarduchi (yes, his brother is Guido if you're old enough to remember).
    My 'Emperor of Evil' Crime Lord has a love of Chinese things. On his first trip to China he imported Han's Orchard House, which he immediately built when he decided that he needed a classier home. On his latest trip to China he brought back a bride. The distinct possibility of children put all his bachelor improvements on the chopping block, especially since the second bedroom had become a sauna/massage room. He didn't want to move again: it takes so long to get things exactly like you want. Then he realized that a basement was the ideal solution! This also opened up room for a butler's quarters, since a butler will most likely be necessary (he has a maid now).
    Almost everything I build has a basement. They offer so much additional space for luxuries and they don't interfere with the roof lines. But they are underground - no windows.
    For my Evil Crime Lord's butler quarters I experimented with a fake window. I think it looks quite acceptable and only required one 'moveobjects on' to achieve (the philodendron between the palms). I also added one of the three piece backgrounds later but I'm not sure about it; they are more for a child's room.
    Any suggestions? Background? Blue? Other? I suppose I could 'Shop a background if I had the right image.... I'm really hesitant to take things from the Exchange due to a very bad download experience.
    start of fake window
    top down view of finished room. The black light fluorescent light is shown here too.
    Wow this looks like it will come in handy, totally bookmarking it! Thanks Snowmoon for this lovely thread.
    When I have something to post or need some inspiration I'll be sure to come here! :mrgreen:
    Edit: May I also suggest adding http://www.colourlovers.com/ to the "Colour Guides" section? It's more interative than colourcombos as anyone can create their own scheme, patterns or name colours and get feedback on it! I don't know if it's the same for colourcombos, but I find colour lovers to be a more enjoyable website. :)
    @ Rattbait I like the background look that you have in Pic #4. I think it gives it a "wide open spaces" feel. I especially like that the BG you chose has mountains, that really sells it for me. I love the green theme and all the plants. I also find myself choosing green to go with a room that is gonna be plant heavy. Awesome job, the Butler's quarters are nice and spacious. My Butler would likely prefer to live at your house, lol, I usually give my butler much less space.
    @Illusie Thanks for all the Sim suggestions, they will be helpful. And perhaps you are right, I may have to do some research and check a few tutorials and finally learn how to build and decorate a Victorian home, properly.
    illusie >> Hello there! Your sims are both lovely and realistic. Doing ethnic races are a bit harder, but you have done a great job. My only suggestion would be on Project 1's eyes. I think you could bring the corners down just a touch and make them just a bit larger (Not cartoon, but just a small slide). For your modern idea, I can't wait to see what you come up with. I always use a lot of windows with mods.
    Yanti >> Thank you! I am glad you stopped by! Care for some tea?
    Elisabeth_Louise >> Welcome! Please do share, I love seeing what helps others and having others to give a second glace is always great! Thanks for stopping by. =)
    Amby >> Howdy! Thank you very much for the links, I will add them to the list. As for your building block, it is rough, I know what it is like when you destroy the same house 10 times because you just can't get out of that "mold". I'm lucky I live in LA, so I can just go out and drive around - Hollywood, Venice and other areas have given me some inspiration for personal builds. As for builds, try something totally new and different than you have ever done before. How about a Shipping Container home? Those are fairly easy as they are boxy, but you can stack them in different ways. You wouldn't have to do much roof work, and you can get crazy with the colors.
    rattbait >> Hello and welcome! Thanks for taking time to stop by and post.
    For your home, I love using windows inside, it is a guilty pleasure and I am glad others use them too. Have you considered putting a painting, photo or statue in the area too? Looking forward to more from you!
    Angel_D0109 >> Hello and thanks for the comments. =) I am glad you are finding this handy, I'll do my best to keep it up. I will add the link that you and aricarai have provided, thank you for the find!
    aricarai >> Thank you so much! I just wish that MS Office formatting would have transferred, hehe, but live and learn. That link is so helpful, I had it at one time, but after a few computer problems, I had lost it. I'm so happy you and Angel gave it to me!
    I have another colour helper!
    http://colllor.com
    I know there are a lot of suggestions for colour guides, but I feel that it's one of the most important aspects of a build or even a sim and their outfit. Colour makes it or breaks it for me! (I think my colour theory instructor brainwashed me!!!)
    Anyways.. I just found this site, and it's super cool! You pick any colour and it shows you all of it's properties (tints/shades, similar colours or you can pick another colour to see the colours that form a gradient between the two). I've experimented for 10 minutes and I love this site already!
