This problem had just happened to me. My husband just spent over an hour trying different things to get my Sims 4 to work. Not sure what fixed it but my game is now working again.

Hello
I am sorry that you had this issue It is good that your game is working okay again now.
And I have the same problem again today! This is getting really annoying!
Hello
I am sorry that you have this issue each time that you update
Try shutting down your computer. Then start the computer again and see if that helps.
Repairing the game may help. To do that, right click on the sims 4 picture in Origin and click repair.
If the issues remain, try uninstalling and reinstalling Origin.
I have found the quickest solution to this bugbear when updating or repairing the game is:
Click "Repair Game" (yes, again)
As soon as the game beings the "Repair" process
Click "Cancel"
Or
The little x on the right side of the very first game being verified
The pop-up will ask something like
"Are you sure you want to stop this process and start over"
Click "Yes"
A moment or two later,
the "Play" button for the game will once again activate

Thanks for that, I'll give that a go IF it happens with the next update.
Fingers crossed that it won't happen again, but not counting on it. I can't understand why it's just started to happen.
This is crazy! My win10 laptop did it fine yesterday, but this win8.1 I have at work has become a nightmare.
I've tried cancelling the repair game option, but it won't let me, I've shut down completely and it's continued "supposedly" repairing game as soon as I started Origin again. Worse case scenario will probably to have to uninstall and reinstall Origin again. I've only had to do that once before, so I might be lucky enough once this decides to quit finalizing!
Oh dear! Just finished updating and was thinking of this thread. I had no problem getting the game to start this time, first try even! I did things a little different (before updating) this time though. Will try the same method with the next update, IF it holds true, I will report my findings here.
Are you up and running again, @February11? I do hope so.

Yes, it's just finished repairing and I'm able to play. I have a feeling this is going to happen EVERY time I update on this computer. Grrrrrrrrrr!
This computer also has Windows 8.1 and a moderate protective suite of software.
I will continue to click buttons, with each update, until I find a solution that works or at least halts this blasted curse.
In the meantime, if you would be so kind, please keep us posted.
It may sound odd, but...
I am actually enjoying chasing this one down.
I WANT a solution! ~smiles~

I will definitely keep posting here about this issue. This time I didn't turn off my anti virus or firewall, and I don't think that was what was interfering with it now. I'd read about that on the EA site where other people were having the same problem.
This has only been happening with this computer now for the last 5 patches, and had never done it before, and it's about 3 years old now, so I don't know why it's started to happen now.
I'm just happy I'm able to fix it without getting overly stressed ( just mildly), and am already prepared for it to happen each time I begin to patch!
Speak to you next month
I have repaired, uninstalled/reinstalled and redid my drivers, and nothing has worked for me. I'm linking my most recent DXDIAG report into this post, any advice?

I have windows 8.1 as well and the last 2 updates were not fun, it would get to the point of installing about 80% when I would get the message that it couldn't finish because one or more files were in use, turns out that windows wanted an update as well, as soon as I updated windows, I was able to update the game. I don't know if this is your problem, I just thought I would add this to the things it might be.

Try switching back to 32 bit mode and see if that helps. To do that ,
Go to games library in Origin . Right click on The Sims 4 picture.
Click on “Game Properties”. Click on Advanced Launch options.
Change the “When launching this Game” setting to “The Sims 4 32-bit”
Try turning off origin in-game and see if that helps. To do that, go,to Game Library in Origin . Right click on The Sims 4 picture. Click on “Game Properties”. Then untick the box that enables origin in-game

Hello @Marshal001
If you have cc/mods in your game, move your mods folder to the desktop. Then start the game and see if the issues are still there.
Try starting the game in windowed mode
