I sincerely hope someone mods out the "no stoves" restriction in dorms, because that will be the first thing I add to my game. I'm sorry but in the UK, most dorms/flats have communal kitchens with stoves/microwaves/fridges/toasters/kettles. Some unis do not even allow you to have minifridges/microwaves or other kitchen-y electrical goods in your room. I don't like this restriction at all, because if the player didn't want to have those in their dorms - they're under no obligation to buy a stove.

The stream felt quite dull to watch and was a bit directionless at times. I'm going to be waiting for the Game Changers' takes on this pack, but from what I've seen so far... idk how to feel. TS3 Uni Life was one of my fave packs, and I've tried very hard not to compare TS3 and TS4 because it's an exercise in futility at this point, but this pack's content hasn't impressed me so far. It's actually very sad because uni is the pack I've been anticipating the most.

    Beware: This is a rant.

Stoves are FORBIDDEN in dorms. For the first time in the history of the Sims (4?) an object has been explicitly FORBIDDEN on a lot.

I have trouble putting into words the stupidity and arrogance of this decision.
In their absence of explanation for this, I think the stove mechanic needed tweaking with respect to roommates not bursting into flames often etc, and instead of programming it to work they just FORBADE them? They FORBADE an utterly mundane and basic function of the Sims series? Cooking on a stove?? It might be equally dumb to be this aggregated by their decision, but here I am. WOW.

If you want to tell a story of a dorm without communal means of making food, of course do it, it honestly seems like a fun thing! But why explicitly restrict us to this?
What about those of us that want to tell the story of our everyday lives, where making a meal and having dinner together with our roommates is a basic way of socialising? Making dinner on a Sunday and having leftovers until it runs out? Baking a cake to cheer everyone up? C o o k i n g o n a s t o v e ?

This might be a small thing, but principally I feel like this goes against one of the foundations of The Sims 4 which they have used time and time again to excuse their actions. The argument *paraphrase* "we want you to tell whatever story you want, so we limit restrictions and direction in your gameplay" *paraphrase* has now been faulted in the weirdest, most unnecessary way possible.

I'd like to end this with a direct quote from the livestream when they specifically talked about dorm specifications: "We've put the least amount of restrictions on this so you can go on and play". Are you s e r i o u s ?

Completely agree. Instead of forbidding it, IMO it would have been much better if when a sim is preparing a party size or family size serving of food, other sims could join in (ie, click the sim cooking and select 'help prepare [dish name]') - that would be more alng the lines you speak of and that many people experience; multiple friends/family all cooking a meal together.

Why couldn't they have done that instead?

    Laziness? 🤔

I know, I was speaking rhetorically.

Speaking of graduation, I'm aware they didn't show it in the livestream but it's safe to assume that's a rabbithole as well. You have to dress them up in a graduation gown and play pretend... which I'm tired of doing. I'm tired of my imagination being the sole driver of my gameplay, filling the gaps in everything the game can't do.

It was actually mentioned explicitly, nearer the end of the stream, but I wouldn't blame you for missing it. It's confirmed that graduation is a rabbithole.

Sigh... i was excited about the announcement of Discover University and i pre-ordered but now i just want my money back.

You can request that through EA's customer service, I believe. It's worth a try.

I'm actually not salty at all, but one thing did bother me: the livestream. I loved SimGuru Azure, but why did they have SimGuru Rad at the wheel? She seems always so uninterested and lacking in kknowledge! And bland. Woudl it hurt to just prepare?

It would not have been hard: make a teen Sim, have him/her apply to uni, choose a major, set them up, show them around, show us what he/she does when not in class, show an event where he/she goes, shwo off some other townies, show them graduating and show them in one of the three new careers. There you go, that DEFINITELY fills two hours and everyone would have been way more excited.

The pack feels so empty that I can't believe is shipping like this.
We can't expect a lot from packs in TS4 because many issues come from the core base game but that doesn't mean we have to accept something as empty as this. This costs 40€ at full price. Island Living was empty as well but at least it brought a completely different arquitecture and lifestyle. Oh my! I can't believe I'm saying this but I think IL might be a better pack that DU :s
I have a lot to say, like a lot! But I want to wait a little bit to gather my thoughts properly and word them in a cohesive way.

In the meantime, I just need to say:

all Sims get the embarrassed moodlet when showering in the communal showers??? Really??

Her enthusiasm about the robots really excited me about the pack for a second there. She was really detailed in telling how they worked and seemed really proud of it, so she probably worked on them specifically, and that's why they're so detailed and well thought out. I really like her A LOT.

    So do I.

Had they allowed her to take the lead in this stream, many of us would probably feel more positively about this pack. I really appreciate the time and effort she put into developing the robots, although they've never been the central focus of my gameplay in prior iterations of The Sims . However, that could change after seeing how much thought was put into making them.

Sincerely, no. I haven't seen the stream but I can still say bubbly attitude can never disguise lack of gameplay, content, focus, objectives and or effort, budget, nor lack of innovation. Only if those watching are wearing rose colored glasses. It doesn't work on me when gamechangers squeal about something they think is soooooo cuuuuuute, either, while the background of their stream of the Sims in the background is burning to the ground (From lack and missing gameplay) trying to divert my attention away from what isn't happening in the game. It's not like they had to reinvent the wheel to build Simbots for the third time. Not something I would jump up and down about, though I like them in all the games, but after twenty years, it's not something anyone should think was hard for them to do. Or faint over being able to lock a computer after twenty years. It's based on the same premise of locking a door or lowering the attraction to it. How hard or how long could that take. But for TS4 devs it seems they have invented rocket science.

I just want to add, first year interns, yes, a little Indie game developer can scream and cheer when they get something programmed correctly or invent a wheel that moves. However, this company has been building Sim games (of all sorts and platforms) for twenty years, why do people continue to look upon this company as inexperienced and 'new' to the field? It's not like they don't know code is it? Or how to add bhavs to an object. Or how to use a 3D modeler. But TS4 is treated as if it's just been born, never had a SIm game ever, everything had to be invented for the very first time. If anyone would look at this pack or the entire games as if after twenty years this is what you get, then they would understand why so many are so disgusted with the results. Because we know better.

Boy was that livestream boring. 2 hours and yet barely anything to do with actual learning. Not surprising considering that classes are just rabbit holes... The class assignments look super basic too and it doesn't seem much different from kid's and teens schooling.

Kids can't ride bikes. Disappointed, but not surprised. You can't edit university dorms when people are already living there because of sToRyTeLlIng? Because it's unrealistic to paint your dorm walls in real life? Was that chick serious? It's a dang video game, and one where the player should CHOOSE what they want their storytelling to be and if they want to paint the wall colors or not. That's just irritating.

They played with robots, had a keg party (whatever the heck that is), juggled a soccer ball, chilled around, but focused nearly no time on school. I've said it before and I'll say again, this doesn't feel like a school pack. It looks like a socialization pack with the bare minimum of school aspects slapped on.

Because when people think of university they are thinking of how TV shows and Movies show them. I mean tell me one movie or TV show which actually show you a university class? Can you name one bet you can't

Gilmore Girls, Friends, and How I met your mother all showed university classes.

For some the feeling of emptiness is nothing new as there is almost some kind of controversy with each pack and it may be be due to the limitations Sims 4 impose on the development of the packs. I am betting EA/Maxis wish they can go back in time and change most points in Sims 4 but they have no choice but to roll with it and hope for the best even if their best is not the best for some.

Disagree, instead of two meh worlds why not spend the money on a fleshed out pack? Nope, they thought it would look more meaty to build two worlds. Those kind of choices have nothing to do with how TS4's engine can work. Those type choices fall on the lead producers, the creative director and Lyndsay. Wasted time, money and talent instead of a meaty pack.

When someone goes to a doctor do they want to see the one who didn't spend much effort in university, and floated through his/her classes and still barely squeaked through with a C or see the one who did apply a lot of effort and got an A? One who thinks everything is a cold or one who knows the differences in an allergy and a cold.

Feels like "Discover University" is actually "Discover Robotics". I appreciate that the robots had energy and care put into them, but they would have been a great addition to a future pack. Instead, they're taking up time and budget in an education pack.

What makes this so different from City Living? Your sims live in penthouse units, and every once in a while there's a "festival" outside - only instead of spicy food or love tea, it's a painting/debate/robot/spirit festival. Anything that actually has to do with the educational component of education is a rabbithole.

I sort of expected the robot lab and the debate room from the first trailer to be actual lots, but those set-ups were completely fake. All extracurricular activities will autonomously take place outside. Of course! Why wouldn't you want a bot festival during a thunderstorm or to go figure painting in the snow? Who needs classrooms when there's an enormous quad that can feel super empty?

The robots is the one thing I actually like about this pack but I gotta agree with you. They maybe belonged somewhere else. While I would love to have robots in my game, I'm not paying $40 for them. They do look like they're done really well though. Best robots of the series yet (or so they seem). Shame they're in this pack that I won't be purchasing for quite awhile, if ever. :(

I agree both of you. They should have called this pack "Discover Robots" based on the minimal info from the gurus prior to the deep dive, who told us to "Wait for the livestream!" And when the livestream arrives, the disorganized, and at many instances, extremely boring presentation focused on robots. (Or, maybe that was the only part that was not snoozeworthy 🤷‍♀️) I'll admit, I fell asleep twice during it, then tried to rewatch it, and immediately understood why I did so.

I should be really excited about this pack. I've waited 5 years for it. I will eventually buy it, I love the look of the campuses. I can find entertainment & storylines for my sims in any pack. But I thought this was going to be the pack that was worth full price? Based on the info drought that made be forget this pack was even announced, then the poor presentation of it via livestream, I'm more than willing to wait several months for this to drop half in price. It's a shame because I already had two sims prepped for this pack.🙁

I can't believe the debate and robot labs are fake. :/ Can they stop with the false advertising please?
    Sharks need love too 🦈

I initially thought this pack looked really good. But re watching the stream as I am at that moment, I’m changing my mind. I was ready to scream with every time I heard “Thats the story you what to tell”

What if I don’t want to tell a story? Just play a game? Just see what happens and get lost in a world? What if I want to tell a story about a sim who fights with her room mates after they get juiced, come home and cause a stove fire wrecking the kitchen? What if I want to tell a story where I woohoo with my professors? Why do I need a cheat to decorate my dorms? Why can’t I build my own dorms??

So much of this pack is set dressing. I expected it but it’s on a par with island living. So much of its rabbit holes which is ironic considering the sims 4 prides itself on not having rabbit holes.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool you can attend university from any world, not a feature I would use as I like living on campus, not necessarily in a dorm but living on campus is fun in sims 2 & 3. If I keep my sims at home in sims 4 and send them to university they are just attending a rabbit hole so where’s the fun in that? I don’t think them promoting the freelance careers as a good answer to having a career and being a student as we all know the free lance careers are broken.

Should we be concerned that when showing this game off they didn’t have seasons (and who knows how many other packs) not installed? I’m betting going by performance issues in the past this year alone (RoM crashing) that this game will suffer some bugs and poor performance. Call it a hunch.

For a university themed pack, very little is about learning that we can actually participate in. But we can put on ugly clothes and TP a statue. Hoaray!

It feels like the robot pack. The guru showing them off was very enthusiastic which is great (especially when the other two gurus didn’t look interested in the slightest, but then they never do) but it does feel like so much focus is on them which is great if you like things that make your sims easy lives even easier.

There are so many unanswered questions. What benefits do sims get from graduating? A boost in careers? How much of a boost? A new skill? A new object? Does graduating with a distinguished career mean anything? Sims 2 had three graduation levels (Probably not the right word but I’m not American) that impacted what level you would start in a career) As it is in sims 4 if your teen finishes school with an A+ they are going to start at level 3 in a career anyhow.
No showing off how loans work other than the gurus giving sims lots of money to avoid a loan, no showing off what happens if your sim defaults on their loan, no mention if the repo man comes for defaulting on a loan or if he comes for defaulting on bills. No showing off your sims failing and what if any are the consequences? Like in the sims 2 you failed and got put on academic probation and had to repeat the semester. You could get expelled. I think the gurus said you can get expelled but again nothing of any consequence. Most likely because the consequence is there isn’t any. Just a moodlet. Whoop de woo.

They said they couldn’t have graduations or proms as they wanted to focus on university but all the university stuff is recycled or rabbit holes.
Half way through the stream you can see them start to run out of content to show, it’s embarrassing. They then plugged the game changers so we can go watch them and their content - but why? It’s their stream. Why can’t they answer things instead of the game changers being their lip service? No doubt that means more “cant do this” coming as is always the way. Remember 150 swatches? The Gurus bigging that up? Then it was revealed via a game changer it was for doors only.

It’s ridiculous but not surprising children can’t ride bikes. They can play pong though. Hoaray!!!

But lots of people are happy with rabbit holes. Only EA could get away so m ah rabbit holes in a closed world game.

    1. You can do that on a residential lot with your roommate
    2. You have to wait until you’ve graduated but I’m sure there’s a workaround
    3. You can build dorms, they’re called Uni housing.

Uni housing isn’t the same as a dorm.

It’s the same lot type though if I’m not mistaken, there isn’t a separate lot type for dorms because you can change them to become something else if you’d like. The dorms in the world are just above shells which is what makes them seem different.

    - The thing that bugs me the most is that the term is only 5 days long. I have Seasons and my seasons are 4 weeks long – does that mean that my sims will have finished a term in a quarter of the spring or fall? That is just ridiculous. I like to play realistically, and these 5-day terms just kills it completely. Why don’t we get to choose the length of the terms ourselves?

That's the thing I cannot understand. They couldn't even try to make it fit different lifespans, really ? Really ??

I'm not either but I know what you mean. In the UK we have a 1st, 2:1, 2:2 and 3rd class degrees. At some unis people who do exceptionally well get a double 1st. I'm at uni and I just about understand it.

they are doing the bare minimum its pretty obvious, look at how many rabbitholes and recycled objects are in this ep. anything that has to do with new animations has been hacked away, that’s why i sorta doubted bunk beds would be coming, it was sad of me to have any ounce of hope by this point.

how about instead of all these sim camp parties they put all that time and effort into the actual game instead. seriously not even a trait, which modders can make easily!

Uni housing isn’t the same as a dorm.

It's the same in game. And you can rebuild them while your sim isn't living there (or with a cheat if a sim is living) and I don't think it's too much of a problem. We can't rebuild vacation lots while sim is on vacation because we don't own them. This is not new.
Cooking restriction seems unnecessary to me too, however.
