When this expansion is announced, I half-jokingly wondered what the controversy/draw back would be, since there's at least one with every expansion. And today we learned that classes are rabbitholes. It's almost funny.

I see people saying stuff like, "oh, well, the Sims 2 did it and we made it through that." But here's the thing. The Sims 2 is 15 years old. We should be better by now, not on par with, or worse off. Seeing lectures and classes in session may not always be the most "exciting" thing in the world, but what about art classes, science labs, theater stages... There's a lot that can be done for fun in a classroom in a simulation game to keep it interesting and fun.

It just seems like this expansion is all about doing stuff we already could do, but in a different place. Granted, I never cared for university expansions anyways, but still, it could be great if it didn't just seem like the same game in a more limited form.

Like, there's just not much to these expansions! They show off all the features before it even comes out, then there's no surprise or discovery. It's boring. I know this has been said by many, but add me to the list!

There is off-campus living, but these look to be simply rental homes.

My big concern is how the dorms will be too.
The silence of the SimGurus, on Twitter, about this subject, is really bad.
It makes me think they're "saving" this other disappointment for other day (maybe friday now, during the livestream), as they already gave the bad news (for some Simmers) abou the rabbit hole classes... But I still have (a little) hope that dorms will be like the penthouses; that we'll be able to build them from scratch. I hope so, I hope so, I hope so... =//
But it's really sad to feel that I have to be prepared for more disappointment... =//

I am getting really fed-up with the EA apologist.
EA has figured out that most simmers will buy anything they put out no matter how lack luster or underdeveloped as long as it looks good visually.
So we have been getting multiple packs/expansions that have less then half what their equivalent Sims 3 packs/expansions for the same price.
And most (some have started to question EA's commitment now) of the big names in the sim community continue to defend EA.
The only way EA is going to learn that the developers need more time and resources is if we start showing them with our wallets.
But no, there are players on the sims 4 forum happy to let everyone know that they already preordered it without even knowing what was in it.
This is what EA expects so they just keep rushing out underdeveloped packs/expansions.
And for all those players who will say voting with your wallet doesn't work, remember "My First Pet".
It bombed and EA has not tried to pull the " Leave things out and make a stuff pack out of it" again.
Players have to stop the " Low expectations, so I'm pleasantly surprised" attitude and call EA out on its underhanded practices.
I mean when Moders can do a better job while not getting paid for it , what does that say about the paid staff at EA.

    I agree.
As a former sims community manager said though: They know they are guaranteed fans money, either at pre order, launch or on sale. Arrogant attitude but it’s not come from nowhere. If you know your fans will buy anything you put out, where is the standard?

I just wish they would have a true gameplay trailer from the beginning. It's not like this is a completely brand new game and there is room for advertising tomfoolery. We KNOW what TS4 plays like and we KNOW what it is capable (and incapable!) of doing. We know this game can't handle a dozen Sims trying to play a soccer game. Those of us that have GT have a pretty good idea of what the gameplay restrictions are when playing clubs, so secret societies probably won't play much differently. We already know activities for kids are minimal - so just come out and say it if kids can ride bikes or not; why wait to answer that? Trying to trick us when it is a game that ADDS ON to a game we already own is a strange strategy.

Maybe I am wrong and new E/GPs bring in a boatload of new Simmers. Perhaps they are advertising more towards attracting base game + Uni sales. I wonder how many new base games they sell with each new pack. I'd reckon most people who buy new packs already have base game if not multiple E/GPs, but I could be entirely wrong.

IIRC, in TS2 University, once all students had selected their dorm rooms, they were darkened. So you could see your own dorm room and all the common areas, but not inside every room. You could knock on their door and be invited in, and then you could see what was inside. There might have been a tiny lag while that loaded, but it wasn’t like going through a loading screen. Anyone remember if I am remembering right? I was hoping City Living would be like that. But of course we know it isn’t. I hope DU is like that, though.

I didn’t play Uni in TS3 much, it seemed like it took forever without enough benefits (some benefits... but I thought that deserved more) and I didn’t enjoy attending classes. (ETA: I should add that I still didn’t regret buying it because it added all kinds of other things, things you could do at home, that DU doesn’t appear to include) I guess having the option to attend class OR use it as a rabbit hole is the best way. But what do we get instead? What’s innovative this time around? Barely anything from what I have seen so far.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's how it worked. I never played TS3 so don't know what uni was like for that game, but I remember knocking on other sims doors in TS2 and hanging out in their rooms. I wonder how many dorm rooms each building will have. Has that been discussed yet? Will you be able to pick out all the people living in one building or will they be picked for us?

Rabbithole classes, huh? Well, I figured those fancy university buildings were set dressing, where our Sims go to attend classes and lectures. One look at those buildings gave me the fake vibe. It all looks great. On the outside. A bit like what Sims4 has become. But where were the robots and drones being built? That robotics lab isn't a classroom. Does each degree have it's own study area where the students get together and work on projects? We saw the art students painting in an outdoor common area, Sims working with robotics in a room that is not a classroom, Sims studying in a library. Does this mean our Sim students will have the option to do things for extra credit that gives their grades a boost? Now that would make up for the classes being rabbitholes. At least we'd have some control in those kinds of situations. And it'd be a lot more fun than watching our Sims sit in a classroom for a couple of hours. I'm just curious about why those activities were shown in the trailer if all the classes are rabbitholes.

But even if all that is true, this EP will disappoint some players in the end. Small wonder the gurus have been so quiet until this week. Sorry to repeat myself, but this feels like another Island Living situation. Mermaids in IL, the repo man in DU. As if those two small additions compensate for the lack of gameplay depth and replayability. The teams hold on to these small additions so they can be thrown into new packs one at a time, like candy being offered to kids; attempts to lure the unsuspecting into buying new packs without waiting to see if the packs actually work as advertised. Does the repo man make up for the fact the whims are borked? Nope. Does repo man have the ability to fix the issues in RoM? Nope. I am not opposed to bringing repo man back, just disappointed more isn't being done to fix certain glitches.

as predicted this is just another ya party pack. did the team forget this is a life simulation not a young adults partying simulation? ive been waiting for years for any meaningful family play but they just keep leaving us in the dust, why even have other life stages if you’re gonna ignore them?

oh and of course bunk beds aren’t included, thats too much time and resources apparently, even though this game makes so much frigging money. :/

ugh. So sad about the classes- this was one of the reasons I was interested to see what ts4 uni would do, especially after ROM had what looked like to be teaching between the sages and their spellcaster pupils. I enjoyed s3's live classes, but wanted more actions, and I'm sad I won't get to experience this with a more powerful game.

I've also heard the careers are rabbit-holes too - is this true? I only found the tweet about the classes.

I still like the look of the simbots, but with everything else, especially what looks like to be non-buildable dorms and non-kid bikes (as all of you say, the silence is telling), I think I will skip this pack, or buy on a steep discount.

I'm tired of EA lying to us and making the pack seem more than what it is. What's the point of having the toddler at the University if they can't live in a house off campus. I truly believe the reason why the Gurus haven't been answering as many questions is because there isn't much content and they don't want us to discover everything in pack with two hours. I stopped trusting pack descriptions and trailers after ROM.

    I know what you mean.
Lost trust with them since strangerville, island living and realm of magic.

packs are just getting smaller and far too much base game in details for university.

toddler issue is annoying as hell :#

Taken from the new gameplay blog: https://www.ea.com/games/the-sims/the-sims-4/news/discover-university-gameplay
your Sim can socialize, show off their dance moves, maybe do a keg stand, and promote Dragon pride
where your Sim can don the red and gold to support their school at School Spirit Day
your Sim can attend bar night with The Brainiacs honor society for a little rest and relaxation
Decorating dorm rooms, hanging out with roommates, or just playing a little ping pong
or head to a spirit event at the bar dressed in their best school colors.

Socializing and wearing the school colors are such exciting activities they had to mention them five times. The majority of activities they're hyping draw on things we can already do in the base game: socialize, go to bars, dress our sims, decorate our sims' living spaces, paint, read a book, use a computer.

Find it interesting their latest marketing has a lot less focus on the bicycles (not even a mention in the blog), which sort of feels like they're trying to draw attention elsewhere so people don't focus on whether the bikes are usable in other worlds or by all ages.

I will be relying on the base game and other packs instead of a full expansion again :#

had to do this with vampires and magic.

    now socialising and partying :*

Alright everyone I removed some off topic comments in here that weren't discussing the game but rather how other's express their opinion on it. That's not the point of this thread so let's leave it out with that please. People are entitled to express their opinion about the game whether it be negative or positive as long as they follow the forum rules when doing so.

    Lets keep this on topic.

So, tomorrow we learn if our concerns were valid. I don’t know about you, but I’m so desperate to add to my game that I have caved and bought packs in the past even if they didn’t look great. I don’t want to cave again. What will you do if you decide not to buy DU?

    -Add more mods? I might.
-Start a challenge that won’t make you miss University? I am thinking of starting the 100 baby challenge.
-Go back to TS2 or TS3? I loaded up TS3 today out of complete frustration for TS4. Too bad it’s butt ugly and I had to stop playing.

I love mods. My game is mod heavy, but the only problem with adding mods is that every update breaks the mods that you've installed and you have to wait until the modders fix what's broken. I'll probably get uni but not right away. I'll wait to see what the modders do to improve it, because I know it's going to be disappointing, but it's the one pack I've been waiting for.

That‘s the downside of using script/mods. That‘s why I use very little of mods. But I do use CC. There a lots of CC bunkbeds out there, and the ones I have in my game work pretty good. I even have loft beds which are very nice. Therefore I‘m really not too worried if they don‘t include bunkbeds in this pack. Although I would like to have them without using CC. But hey, I guess you can‘t have everything, especially not in TS4.

tbh they should stop focusing on creating a cute background for neighborhoods and focus on actual playable lots

Yes, how can I glorify an game for it's abundant use of backdrops and scarce availability of lots.

I know right? But everyone and their mother (well not everyone here on this thread mostly.) are just FINE with this...this baffles the ever crap out of me.

A pack that claims to be university and you can't even do much in academic wise......smh...I don't wanna party and goof off all the dang time, I came here to learn!

Just found out the classes are rabbit holes too from pixelade. I read the comments and a lot of them were saying they are fine with it which is funny because I remember a lot sims 4 players were saying that was one of many reasons they didn't like about sims 3. Now they are okay with it? Interesting... plus if seeing your sim go to class every day would get boring, wouldn't waiting for them to pop out that rabbit hole all the time get boring as well?

It seemed to me that these people just copy paste the opinion of the video creator. You know that syndrome of the fandom when a famous person says something.. suddenly everyone agrees or feels the need to somehow agree even when they actually wouldn't. I am not saying all these people are that much lacking a backbone, but IT IS a thing... So sad.
Let's see the comment section on a video where the creator is not happy with these rabbitholes, it will just be the same. We live in a time era where influencers are used for marketing strategies so yeah..

Rabbitholes classrooms.. Do not even let me start on that! They could have worked perfectly with active tasks, social interactions, deadlines in REAL just like how we have active careers etc. I was expecting this from The sims 4.

I have a lot of CC too. I do try to stick to the simpler mods, I really like the ones that don't need updating. I don't have bunk beds in my game yet so I'll have to get some. I have a feeling that bunk beds might be coming in another pack. I have a feeling that a lot of stuff fans want will be coming in other packs hence EA still making EP's, stuff and packs for this game instead of talking about TS5. I mean five years in and no sprial stairs, no pool table, no drums. They are going to squeeze every last dime out of fans by making new packs out of what was standard in other packs. I really want to see something that makes TS4 feel like it's own game and not TS2/3 in a half. There are things that l do like about TS4, but unfortunately all the bugs that haven't been fixed make those things less enjoyable. At this point it is what it is, but it's so frustrating because EA missed so many opportunities with this game. It's like they stopped trying to be innovative and are only catering to one demographic. I've been playing the sims since the first game and I feel like EA doesn't care about their long time fans as if were still not playing the game. Sims fans are extremely vocal so you can't tell me by now that EA doesn't know what their fans want.
