The lack of "stuff" actually included with the base game is appalling. I used to buy the stuff packs, but will not be paying the outrageous prices at the sims 3 store.

I've always found that using cheats ruined the game for me. Now this is just a personal thing, and I don't expect everyone to feel the same way. Try to enjoy the journey and not just focus on the end goal (i.e. top of the career ladder). If you give your sims a wider variety of thing to do, I'm sure you'll have more fun…
I honestly don't think leveling the terrain will help. Sometimes I can get it to place and then other times get the error on the same part of the house. It's very frustrating.
