Just getting over the flu, I think. Been down from October 13 - 29th with a fever, and only just now starting to really feel like myself. This stuff is the WORST. Got a clean bill of health from the doc yesterday, even though I'm still hoarse and have a cough. So I went and got my flu shot. Not putting myself through that again. Nope. No way. Nuh-uh. Lol. Thanks for asking! And thanks for everything you do!

"Tis the season to be... " in bed with the flu, during my lecture week. Could have been worse (i.e. in bed with the flu during my midterms!).
At least, Monday's elections went smoothly. I basically wasn't in favour of any of them, well maybe Trudeau up to a point, but the outcome could have been A LOT worse.
So, lots of downsides and couple upsides. I guess I'm getting "Grumpy" as I get older.

I always joked that I had every intention of becoming a "crotchety old man." I'm afraid that, at 54, I am well on my way there! Seriously, not most of the time. But when something someone does just seems plain stupid or foolish for stupid's sake, I do find that I have little patience. Things like walking into a pole because you are texting while walking. Seriously? That kind of stuff.
That doesn't make you grumpy, lol. It makes you intelligent. I've been wondering about the "downfall of man" these last years, as well. I can just see it coming, lol. I guess I've become something of a pessimist, a realist and a conspiracy theorist all at the same time in my later years. Paranoia? Maybe. Anyways, you're too upbeat to be crotchety, considering how much you've gone through.
In case you're wondering, my father is making a wonderful recovery from his summer's severe illness. He continues to get stronger and more independent. Although, two days ago he began complaining about a persistent itch under his arm, which could be the disease already coming out of remission. If so, it happening so soon would not be a good thing. We shall wait and hope for the best.
I WAS wondering! Thanks for mentioning that. Is the itching psoriatic arthritis? I can't remember if you told me what it was. (If it's private, just pm me. I think you might have a pages-long pm from me somewhere in there anyways.. lol) I'm praying that his recovery continues, and the disease stays in remission!
Our weather here in Rhode Island has been nearly perfect autumnal weather. Moderate temperatures with mostly sunny days to allow the foliage to change slowly into a beautiful sight. It is the first time in years that some major storm hasn't ripped the leaves off before they had a chance to shine. I am enjoying it very much.
You didn't happen to take any pictures, did you? I'd love to draw some of those scenes - if you wouldn't mind me using your reference photos for drawings I'll sell? I'm starting to work in color more, so it would be fascinating to attempt fall landscapes!
Tomorrow is the eighth anniversary of my Mom's passing. I miss her terribly. I don't do well with anniversaries of sad events, but I am holding my own. My family will get together on Sunday for a memorial mass and a meal at iHop, one of her favorite restaurants. I am no longer religious, but will attend out of respect for the fact that mom was, and to be with family to celebrate her. I am, however, spiritual, and feel her presence often in my day to day life. It isn't quite the same as having her here, but it certainly helps.
I'm sorry hon. It's good that you'll be spending time with your family, celebrating her life. We did that in August with my Aunt. We lost my Uncle to brain cancer in June. He had kidney cancer several years ago, and due to some fabulous alternative treatments, and a kidney surgery, he was able to get several years in remission. He had a stroke in May, though, right before my birthday, and it turned out it was the result of a cancerous lesion on his brain stem. It was truly awful, and something I hope I never have to watch ANY of my loved-ones go through. Even though we were states away, I hand-held my Aunt virtually through so much of that time. (There's only 6 years between us, so we're actually very close.) She and my Uncle had planned to do an anniversary trip to Disney World with their two adult sons, and we expected my Aunt to cancel it. But it was already paid-for, so my Father took our whole family to Disney, to be moral support and help celebrate my Uncle's life. It was such a wonderful, bittersweet thing to do.
Yesterday I watched a YouTube video about someone who has completely rebuilt every TS4 town. The video was actually about her exploring the save file of someone else who had done the same. It was cool listening to her critique, which was often along the lines of "oh, I would never have thought of that" or "she is so much better at public lots than I am." My ego was even indirectly stroked when she complimented features that I've included in builds in TS3. Like including pet objects in public parks.
It was a fun way to see so many TS4 lots showcased without having to load them. And, honestly, it did make me think, "hmmm, that does look interesting," for some build objects that we simply don't have in TS3. Specifically, some rather interesting commercial building signage. But, mostly, it was just fun watching someone's live reaction to someone else's builds that they were a fan of. (I know, dangling participle.)
I'm not sure I understand? Someone rebuilt all the TS4 towns in TS3? Why? Or did you mean the other way around? I've been playing TS4 (ust the base pack) on my laptop. I got it during the $5 sale, and I have to admit, it runs MUCH better on my laptop. It's like a cross between TS2 and TS3. The wants system in TS3 (can't remember the name of it), has become the "Whims" system in TS4, and still provides lifetime rewards, but isn't mandatory any more. Which will make my Mom happy. I couldn't move her to TS3 from TS2 because she HATED that system. Now she can just ignore it, if she wants. I feel as if they tried to take the best parts that everyone loved from each game, and streamline the system so that it runs better, so I don't really have a bad thing to say about it. TS3 is still my favorite though. I like the graphics better, (which, of course, is why it runs so poorly on my system), and it's more detailed in every way. Some of the tools in TS4 are a little... strange. I can't decide if I love or hate the character creation process.
It's funny you mention the dangling participle. I am always doing that, and then berating myself for it, because I know it's bad. I remember enough grammar to know what not to do, but not enough to have remembered what it was called till you reminded me. Thanks!
Oh, and this was indirectly a result of the release of the university pack for TS4. Which, essentially, is a watered down version of that from TS3. I got pulled into a live chat on that subject and more than once the subject of the inclusion of bicycles came up, with lots of jokes about where a Sim was expected to cycle without an open world. I was rather impressed that, even with references to TS3, and even TS2, thrown in, the chat remained civil and pleasant. It was a nice change from the flame wars that often happen with a new release.
I have to admit, the world system in TS4 is confusing to me. It's not the neighborhoods of the TS3, where you loaded into a different area whenever you went to another location. But it's also not as limited as TS3, in that you can have multiple households in the same neighborhood and switch between them. I always hated that you couldn't do that in TS3, and so did my Mom (who has this thing for creating our family as the Sims and then wanting to run all of the different family members "in turn". lol)
@goodFeel93 That sounds cool about some houseboats. When I do get back to the game I will still be playing the islands, so......
I am also starting to check out components to build myself a new system. My laptop is starting to show its age, lagging and overheating. Mostly overheating. I am compensating with external fans, with some success, but the writing is on the wall. I am amazed to see so many systems built with glass cases and LED components standard from all the major companies. The effect is awesome! I built a see through case over a decade ago, but it took quite an effort to get the lighting to fit the case and place the control switches, etc.... These have lights on all the fans, the mother board, the graphics card, even memory chips! Of course, each component with this feature is about $40-$50 more than the same quality gear without. So to go all the way does add quite a bit to the total build cost. BUT, there is almost no work involved. Just plug everything into the existing, dedicated switched on the motherboard and control it from the available software once the system is installed. It is very tempting.
Then my brain says "or you could spend that money on a more powerful system that doesn't light up." D4mned logic!
I know the feeling. I built a desktop in 2006, that runs better than any laptop I've had. The problem is, with my illness I'm often in bed, so the laptop gets used far more than the desktop. I did get a Mac mini recently, though, and am considering moving everything to there. The only problem being that while I can run the Sims 4 on both Mac and Winblows without having to purchase twice, I apparently can't do the same thing with The Sims 3. Grr.
I got exceedingly lucky, though. I have a friend who works for a security company, and they have to recycle their systems frequently, to keep up with the latest technology or when a box goes out of warranty. They strip the systems of hard drives, but everything else is pretty-much intact. He found a laptop WORKSTATION in the recycle room, and he grabbed it. I had to pay for a new hard drive, but he dropped in 16M of RAM he just happened to have "lying around", and then he installed Windows and Linux onto it for me, and now I'm just waiting for it to arrive. He showed me a real-time video of the boot process on it and it is FOUR SECONDS! I kid you not! *faint* Now, obviously, it doesn't have any software installed yet. But my current system takes anywhere from 10 - 20 minutes to boot up. I basically turn it on and walk away. So I tend to only reboot it once every couple of weeks, and just let it sleep most of the time until it lags all to hell.
I didn't realize it till he told me, but businesses get totally different systems. I thought they'd get more stripped down systems than you'd find in the gaming sector, but he swore up and down that a workstation would run ANY game I wanted it to. (I'm looking-forward to many hours of ESO, Oblivion, Skyrim, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn and a host of other things that I haven't played in over a year.)
You might want to take a poke through business laptop systems and see what you can find. Although, it's likely that the best workstations would be more expensive in the business sector than the private sector.

I snipped both your posts a bit. The "young" and "old" notion is extremely interesting, at least from a linguistics and etymology point of view. In English, age is an acquired state, while in most other language it's a possession. It seems to reflect the medieval conception that advancing years means knowledge and wisdom as opposed to youth which was basically seen as irrationality. The locution "to be XXX old" is extremely interesting, as we say that a baby is couple days "old" while obviously a baby isn't "old", it's "young". It reflects that it used to be considered that being couple days old was more important than the fact that one is still young and has many years to come. @goodFeel93 's comment more or less along theses lines shows a slight evolution on the numeral. Back in the ole time, 25 wasn't exactly "young". It was actually fairly old, as life expectancy was about 25 to 27.5 years old in some regions at that time, from the tenth to twelfth century. I'm 37, and I would have been considered an elder back then! Like they say: "Ain't getting any younger!"
I've always found linguistics and etymology particularly interesting. I never realized there was a difference in perspective that affected the language, but I suppose it makes sense. What do you see as the difference between an "acquired state" and a "possession"? To me, they feel like the same thing?
A cute way to see it is like I once heard: "You're young as long as you look forward in life. You start getting old the day you look behind." (I never knew who originally said it in French.)
I guess that explains a lot about me. I used to look behind with regret all the time, and now I don't. I suppose that means I'm getting younger now.

Just getting over the flu, I think. Been down from October 13 - 29th with a fever, and only just now starting to really feel like myself. This stuff is the WORST. Got a clean bill of health from the doc yesterday, even though I'm still hoarse and have a cough. So I went and got my flu shot. Not putting myself through that again. Nope. No way. Nuh-uh. Lol. Thanks for asking! And thanks for everything you do!

I guess I've become something of a pessimist, a realist and a conspiracy theorist all at the same time in my later years. Paranoia? Maybe. I think you might have a pages-long pm from me somewhere in there anyways.. lol) I'm praying that his recovery continues, and the disease stays in remission!
You didn't happen to take any pictures, did you? I'd love to draw some of those scenes - if you wouldn't mind me using your reference photos for drawings I'll sell? I'm starting to work in color more, so it would be fascinating to attempt fall landscapes!
I'm sorry hon. It's good that you'll be spending time with your family, celebrating her life. We did that in August with my Aunt. We lost my Uncle to brain cancer in June. He had kidney cancer several years ago, and due to some fabulous alternative treatments, and a kidney surgery, he was able to get several years in remission. He had a stroke in May, though, right before my birthday, and it turned out it was the result of a cancerous lesion on his brain stem. It was truly awful, and something I hope I never have to watch ANY of my loved-ones go through. Even though we were states away, I hand-held my Aunt virtually through so much of that time. (There's only 6 years between us, so we're actually very close.) She and my Uncle had planned to do an anniversary trip to Disney World with their two adult sons, and we expected my Aunt to cancel it. But it was already paid-for, so my Father took our whole family to Disney, to be moral support and help celebrate my Uncle's life. It was such a wonderful, bittersweet thing to do.
I'm not sure I understand? Someone rebuilt all the TS4 towns in TS3? Why? Or did you mean the other way around? I've been playing TS4 (ust the base pack) on my laptop. I got it during the $5 sale, and I have to admit, it runs MUCH better on my laptop. It's like a cross between TS2 and TS3. The wants system in TS3 (can't remember the name of it), has become the "Whims" system in TS4, and still provides lifetime rewards, but isn't mandatory any more. Which will make my Mom happy. I couldn't move her to TS3 from TS2 because she HATED that system. Now she can just ignore it, if she wants. I feel as if they tried to take the best parts that everyone loved from each game, and streamline the system so that it runs better, so I don't really have a bad thing to say about it. TS3 is still my favorite though. I like the graphics better, (which, of course, is why it runs so poorly on my system), and it's more detailed in every way. Some of the tools in TS4 are a little... strange. I can't decide if I love or hate the character creation process.
It's funny you mention the dangling participle. I am always doing that, and then berating myself for it, because I know it's bad. I remember enough grammar to know what not to do, but not enough to have remembered what it was called till you reminded me. Thanks!
I have to admit, the world system in TS4 is confusing to me. It's not the neighborhoods of the TS3, where you loaded into a different area whenever you went to another location. But it's also not as limited as TS3, in that you can have multiple households in the same neighborhood and switch between them. I always hated that you couldn't do that in TS3, and so did my Mom (who has this thing for creating our family as the Sims and then wanting to run all of the different family members "in turn". lol)

I know the feeling. I built a desktop in 2006, that runs better than any laptop I've had. The problem is, with my illness I'm often in bed, so the laptop gets used far more than the desktop. I did get a Mac mini recently, though, and am considering moving everything to there. The only problem being that while I can run the Sims 4 on both Mac and Winblows without having to purchase twice, I apparently can't do the same thing with The Sims 3. Grr.
I got exceedingly lucky, though. I have a friend who works for a security company, and they have to recycle their systems frequently, to keep up with the latest technology or when a box goes out of warranty. They strip the systems of hard drives, but everything else is pretty-much intact. He found a laptop WORKSTATION in the recycle room, and he grabbed it. I had to pay for a new hard drive, but he dropped in 16M of RAM he just happened to have "lying around", and then he installed Windows and Linux onto it for me, and now I'm just waiting for it to arrive. He showed me a real-time video of the boot process on it and it is FOUR SECONDS! I kid you not! *faint* Now, obviously, it doesn't have any software installed yet. But my current system takes anywhere from 10 - 20 minutes to boot up. I basically turn it on and walk away. So I tend to only reboot it once every couple of weeks, and just let it sleep most of the time until it lags all to hell.
I didn't realize it till he told me, but businesses get totally different systems. I thought they'd get more stripped down systems than you'd find in the gaming sector, but he swore up and down that a workstation would run ANY game I wanted it to. (I'm looking-forward to many hours of ESO, Oblivion, Skyrim, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn and a host of other things that I haven't played in over a year.)
You might want to take a poke through business laptop systems and see what you can find. Although, it's likely that the best workstations would be more expensive in the business sector than the private sector.

I've always found linguistics and etymology particularly interesting. I never realized there was a difference in perspective that affected the language, but I suppose it makes sense. What do you see as the difference between an "acquired state" and a "possession"? To me, they feel like the same thing?
I guess that explains a lot about me. I used to look behind with regret all the time, and now I don't. I suppose that means I'm getting younger now.
