Second Chance Prison

Disclaimer, this challenge is my personal twist/tweak/adaptation of the prison challenge that is made by The Sim Supply, check out the original rules and the let's play in which he made the rules!

The Story

The government has contacted you that there is a shortage of minimum security prisons where prisoners are trained to have a second chance at a normal life on the straight path. They offer you to take over an abandoned prison building that hasn't been used for a while, and set up your own facility there. Will you be up for a challenge?

The Prison Shell Building

You will start out with a 50x50 empty lot (or an empty 64x64 lot from GT) and build your prison on it. For the prison you will wall off the major part of the plot, or the whole plot, with a very high wall. Leave an area outside of the prison, or a very well separated area at one side of the prison, where your warden(s) can build themselves a home. Just 1 wall separating the warden's home from the prison interior is not allowed for safety reasons. You can't build the wardens house at this stage yet, so leave an empty area, separated from the main prison, where they can build it later!

You are constructing a 'shell building' of the prison here, meaning you can place walls, floors, ceilings, floortiles, wallpapers, windows and doors, but you can NOT place any type of item or furniture. Remember, it is an abandoned old prison so everything that was in it has been long lost.

Building / Furnishing Rules

There are different areas that a prison needs to or can have, and every area needs to be walled off and separated with doors. Take this into consideration while building your shell, so you can spend your tight budget on just the wardens house and the furnishing. The areas are:
  • Cellblock Area: Each cell is required to have at least a bed and a toilet, and a sink. They can be as cheap as you want but they can't be 'uncomfortable' because those are only allowed in the separation punishment.
  • Separation Area: These cells also to have a bed and a toilet, and a sink, and this is the only place where 'uncomfortable' objects are allowed. At least 2 separation cells, with large households at least 4.
  • Shower Area: You have to have as many showers as you have inmates. If you have the OR pack you might want to use the outdoor shower, as you can just put them in a row without walls in between, and use all of them at the same time!
  • Canteen Area: With enough tables and chairs (or picknick tables) to seat all prisoners.
  • Skill Areas: At least one of them. If you want to have multiple, make sure they are all separated. Skill areas can be for example: painting, wood working, a workout room, a community kitchen, a library, computer area or a community garden. Strictly NO bars, because drinking is off-limits in prison.
  • Yard Area: What's a prison without a yard?

All areas need to be separated by doors that will be locked to your warden(s) only at ALL time except when the prisoners have to move from one area to the other. Make sure that prisoners have access to a toilet area in or near other indoor areas where they spend some time!

You are also allowed to use an unlock objects cheat, but ONLY to unlock GTW items that are normally found in police stations, like cell beds and toilets or fencebars and gates and the likes, nothing else. (* Unless, like me, you feel that it is idiotic that random objects are locked, and always use the unlock career objects cheat. Feel free. As long as you buy everything legit!)

The Warden(s)

Your prison will have only male or only female prisoners, as there are no mixed prisons. You can have 1 or 2 wardens, they have to be the same gender as your inmates. They can be CAS created by you, downloaded, plucked out of other households, and with any traits and aspirations you like. They do have to be young adult, unplayed, with default money and zero skills. Your warden(s) job is to run the prison so none of them can have a job outside of the lot, and neither can any prisoner. Your wardens can also NOT have children, children have no place in a jail, and will take up household space meant for prisoners.

Use the ‘freerealestate on' cheat to 'buy' the prison shell that you have constructed. You have to both build the warden's house AND furnish (part of) the prison with your 20k (or 22k if you have 2 wardens) starting budget. This is really one of the major differences from the original rules, where the whole prison is built from the budget, because there is NO way you can make a prison look like a prison with such a small budget. A prison should not look like a random collection of plunked down rooms or some kind of starter house, period!

Getting Prisoners

You can get prisoners as soon as you have all the necessities in place for them, a cell, a shower, a toilet in all bathrooms they have access to, and at least 1 skill item they can 'train' with. You can also choose to wait untill you furnished all of your prison areas with some basics, that's completely up to you. Prisoners are required to wear a uniform at all time!

A new prisoner can be CAS created by you, plucked off the street / out of other households, downloaded, or spawned in with ‘Sims.spawn’, as long as they are unplayed and without any prior skills. They also can NOT add money to your household, if they do you have to take it off your balance with the money cheat. If you are going to spawn one in make sure they have the gender that your prison houses. One way to do thatis by spawning one in in a separate household and then moving them in with testingcheats - add to household when you have the right gender.

If you use the (recommended) Big Households Mod, and already have more then 8 sims, you can't edit them in CAS like you normally would, but you can dress them in the uniform in up to 4 other ways at the moment, depending on what packs / mods you own. You can dress them in another household before adding them, have them buy an outfit from a manikin (but this will be their 2nd outfir and is therefore a pain), plan their outfit in a walk-in closet or copy it to them from another prisoner with MC Command Center's Dresser plugin.

You will be eligible (but not obligated) for adding a prisoner when:
  • You have a cell ready for them, furnished with the exact same items as the other cells.
  • You have at least 2 furnished isolation cells (with Large Household Mod 4) ready and furnished, in case you need them.
  • You have enough showers (1 per prisoner) in the shower areas and enough toilets (1 per 2 prisoners, with Large Household Mod 1 per 4) in every bathroom they have access too.
  • You have enough skill items to keep all of your inmates occupied at the same time.
  • New prisoners arrive on weekdays only, and with a maximum of 1 new prisoner(s) (with Large Household Mod 2) per day.

* Special rules for Large Household Mods will go into effect when your mod allows for and you are planning to have a household of 16 or more prisoners.

Daily Routine

Your prisoners will be moved as a group, and will not be allowed to roam freely over the prison or to go in or out of their cells as they want, for security reasons. When the group has go to another area you can either temporarily unlock the door or teleport them. When a sim wants to do something which is in an area they are not in at the moment they just have to wait, again, a prison is no hotel. Special rules for the areas:
  • Cellblock Area: They can only spend the nights here, and always locked up in their own cell. You can add a rule that allows an inmate to 'earn' the right to an extra luxury in their cell, that they can loose if they get separation punishment.
  • Separation Area: Really up to you how long they have to stay. They HAVE to clean the toilet before they can leave if that is dirty.
  • Shower Area: The group will visit this area once per day. If a sim doesn't shower during that time, the next chance is tomorrow. You might want to plan it in the evening if you allow your sims to go to a gym area during daytime, nobody wants to sleep sweaty.
  • Canteen Area: Your sims will eat here, and also hang out when it's daytime and they aren't in one of the other areas.
  • Skill Areas: This is the only (partial) exception to the group moving. The whole group WILL move into the skill area, but you can send different sims to different rooms. If possible it is recommended to send each sim to an area that matches their interest, after all you are rehabilitating them. If you build a library, it can have ONLY skill books. After all this is a skill area, not a chill area.
  • Yard Area: Your group of prisoners will visit this area once a day.

Behaviour / Rehabilitation Rules

Your warden(s) have a big responsibility for the prisoners they take care of. They HAVE to keep a professional distance at all time, and treat the prisoners with dignity. After all, who are you going to rehabilitate when you walk around abusing them! In this light it is NOT allowed for your wardens to have either romantic or mean / evil interactions towards any prisoner, full stop.

You will also not instigate any romantic, mean or evil interactions from the side of prisoners to other prisoners or wardens. If that happens autonomously, the prisoners involved will have to go to the separation unit as a punishment.

A prisoner is rehabilitated when:
  • They have at least 1 skill on level 10. (Hardmode: 2 skills.)
  • After reaching level 10 they have to show good behaviour for 24 hours. (Hardmode: 48 hours.) During this time you are not allowed to make money from their level 10 skill(s), you just observe if they are ready to be released.
  • Once the prisoner has reached these goals they have to move out immediately!

Finances

As you are working for the government by running this prison, the government pays you a small salary and an allowance per prisoner to pay the food and the bills. This amount is 500 per prisoner and 1.000 per warden. This money is payed to you when the bills arrive, for the number of prisoners you have at that exact moment. You can add this amount with the money cheat.

Goals
  • Have a full base game household of 8 sims including your warden(s). (Hardmode: Have a full household to the limit of the mod you use.)
  • Completely furnish your prison, meaning all cells (even if there are more then the amount of prisoners you have), all bathrooms, all rooms in general, etc.
  • Rehabilitate 25 prisoners. (Hardmode: 50 prisoners or if you want to go tough 100 prisoners.)
