Do you think there's a residual darkness to previous sims games?

I think even among deviant players we all do it differently.

My play pretty much always involved a story in any sims game... and a set up by me. I probably can't go into what that entailed on this forum in detail but I can say things like black widow, abductions, and prisoners. Some poor sim was going to be tortured and very probably wouldn't make it out alive. There are also manipulation stories..
I think for Sims 4 the only reason I can't get my deviant fix in the same way is that the sims don't reflect that they are undergoing sustained deprivation. Before if they were miserable.. they were miserable, they didn't get out their phone and suddenly have a happy moment just before they died of starvation..
I have been working around the game though lately and have started to enjoyed deviant play in some new ways and even the above ways with some manipulation. If it makes me cackle and wonder about myself it's good in my book.

Neia's posts actually made me realize... I want a bunch of control in my deviant play. I don't care about random meteors because I don't want the hard times to fall on all my sims indiscriminately... just the ones I chose. The tombstone of life and death was something I would use in my play now and then though and I do miss it... because I got to pick and chose when death came to call and who they called on... and also the animations were funny.

One thing that bothers me is nearly everything in their vicinity makes them happy. I can't go 30 seconds without my sims having a big silly grin on their face even right after their going through something that bothers them. Simply walking outside makes them burst into a big smile, that makes sense for nature loving sims but for everyone else it's looks silly.

Just for some ideas..I'd like to see the return of the creepy "their coming" phone calls with creepy stalker music, where for example a sim can be kidnapped, and you have to pay to get them back or trade something valuable. Once the sim returns, they become paranoid for days, look around them, or even have to go to a shrink.

You can buy special items from the shady man in the coat again, and he looks over his shoulders before giving you the item. Would be neat if you had to call him in order to get lifetime gifts such as fountain of youth potion, etc.

Or if you witness a fight somewhere you can place a bet on who's going to win.

In a casino pack, I would love to see a go big or go home interaction giving you the option to possibly lose a lot of money, a home, car, etc.

The Sims 4 needs a dose of reality that isn't rainbows and sunshine all the time.

Sims in Sims 4 don't even care if they sleep in the dirt. In sims 3 they got the moodlets complaining about lack of light or wall covering and in Sims 4, you give them a nice carpet on the dirt and they are walking around smiling.

Really? I guess I shouldn't saw anything though. I'm just not the scared type. Even when I was a kid horror movies never bothered me. I think the only time I was even apprehensive was when I saw Janet Leigh get it in the shower (in Psycho) ....and that was because it's something that could really happen.
Alfred 🐸🐸🐸🐸 movies could scare me. That scene was scary in Psycho. There is a scene in the Birds that freaked me out as a kid too. I guess that is why I like the Sims 1 a lot. It had a lot of that classic darkness and humor and Alfred 🐸🐸🐸🐸's movies had.

Sims 3 didn't scare you? Then you haven't played bridgeport at night as a babysitter and saw vampire mom die right in front of you then haunt your sim's house and possess the stove while the sims slept. I was so scared I had to shut down my game haha.

But Sms 2 had me banning my sims from downtown at night because I was scared of the vampires to the point of adding a bowling alley in their house

If there are no risks then you don't feel any sense accomplishment when you avoid those things or when your sims live on are happy despite their troubles. I'd take more darkness over sunshine all the time tbh. I can relate to my sims more - only 'happy' fast becomes almost psychedelic and creepy imo. Bring on the challenge, the darkness, the sorrow and pain! There is no way I can love my sims as much as I can if there is no risks.

Well, I think I play a bit like you do. I also like being able to direct things to a certain degree.

Hmm, I guess I would like a bigger toolbox for makings sims feel bad or seriously ill. That way I could incorporate it into my stories and it would be really useful. The wishing well was fun, I guess I would like to be able to influence misfortunes a bit more. I don't use it for all households or stories but I do let bad things happen.

It was better because it was more balanced. Your nemesis didn't want to give you hugs and Sims could accidentally die which was great and theynow i have to cheat my sims to death.

I wish I could say the same. My teen died while on a date today from laughing. I had to cheat her back to life.
But I do get your point ;)

And to the OP, yes there is something slightly "darker" about them. I for one kinda like this cartoonish version a lot. In fact, when I went back to playing a bit of TS3 today, I really missed their expressive little faces. That said, I'd really love for the burglar & repo-man to come back

I don't think it's any particular generation because it's been going on for a while. It's any time that kids don't learn that there is winning and losing and if they don't want to lose they need to put more effort into what they are doing. I feel bad for the kids who think this is the way life is. When they get out into the world they're going to get a shock.

lol I've never had a sim die from any emotional stage, maybe because my Sims jump from one to the next like crazy. I cheated my repairlady to die from laughter though.

But see, you can cheat her back or include it in your story save without existing, I really love random stuff happening to my sims because it makes them feel more alive, it makes me care to keep them alive.

Lol but that would be too mean :( I miss burglars in game too, not irl though haha I like the power getting shut off but there is nothing like the repo man coming to steal your toilet.

I think the current Generation, I've seen it ith my younger sister too even though it isn't as bad as in places like USA, it's everyone gets a trophy for arriving. When I was a kid I just had to deal with loosing and later on you either try harder to win or don't care about loosing. Even more games try to hold you hand and make sure nobody really looses, older games would have you die and either start over the whole game or the level.

@06Bon06 I believe in the balance, of winning, but yet being aware of the failing.
I'm only 18 years old, I don't know if I match in that generation, but I was never praised either, So I feel happy when kids get recognized.
But... I'm aware of the consequences of that in some people.
I think it's mostly likely @PHOEBESMOM601 said, It doesn't really have a generation... I think. Every "Generation" has its own bad sides.

Also maybe depends in where you live and, etc.

@06Bon06 Yeah that repo-man was great, zapping your stuff away for paying your bills like 5 minutes late. :D I definitely think they should bring back all the NPCs sooner or later.

And I really didn't want her to just die like that. I was playing another teen in another household, thinking "oh those are so cute together". They clicked, then she died. It was pretty upsetting haha But it's true that it's a little weird to bring her back into the game and no one having any kind of memory of someone ever dying.. it'd be cool if they introduced an actual memory system with fun moodlets like "Spooked! From seeing a sim that looks just like a lost loved one". :D

I love this thread and I wish I could reply to everything but it's hard because I'm on my phone. XD

I like the idea of a deviant stuff pack that someone mentioned! I really wish the Sim Ray from GTW had been more deviant. As far as I can tell you can't really do anything destructive with it.

I'm itching for supernaturals again because not only do I love magic but they have a higher chance for darkness, especially vampires and witches. I was playing Agnes Crumplebottom as a witch in Sims 3 and I used love spells to destroy every marriage in town (since 3 has that "instant divorce from cheating" mechanic). By the time I was done every person in Sunset Valley had a new random partner because of my mischief. I also burned down Nancy Landgraab's house because she kicked me out of a party. Good times, good times.

I'll be happy for any kind of Supernatural in Sims 4 but I'm afraid that they'll want to keep the game darkness-free and tone them down too much.

"You just learned an Energized Spell! You just learned a Flirty Spell!" ....My worst nightmare.

Lol @06Bon06 totally agree, that was a great memory system. But I'd like them to update it to make it more specific to TS4's moodlet system, some of those are hilarious to read ;)

@06Bon06 Yes, please! I hated The Sims 3 Memory system compared to The Sims 2.

And I get what you mean, my Cousin is 13-14, and I absolutely dislike her, from being ungrateful to being a false person, totally ruined.

I miss the memory system so much! You could read what your sims did! Maybe memories can have an emotion attached to them and you can tell sims to remember and they get that emotion.
