As an alternative, the Mormons developed their own style of street names/addresses. It is still in use throughout cities in Utah.

Choose the center point in town. That is 0.

Find the directions, North, South, East, West.

The first street North of 0 is named 100 North. The second street North is named 200 North, etc.

The first street East is called 100 East. And so on.

Naturally, a buildings address will be a number between streets. e.g. 323 East 200 South, or 577 West 1200 North. Normally, even numbers are on the North and East sides of a street, while odd numbers are on the South and West sides.

Its very simple to pinpoint a location in town with only the address to go by.

Just thought I would toss that out there for those that dont know. ;)

I love this thread :D It's great to see all the ideas!

DocSprock- that is cool about SLC names. Makes a lot of sense, even if removes a lot of charm from the city.

I decided to do desert names for Rattlesnake Ridge.

    Kalahari
    Namib
    Owami
    Sahara
    Akshi
    Gobi
    Ordos
    Taklamakan
    Tahami
    Accona
    Olesky
    Tabernas
    Wahiba Sands
    Mojave
    Sonoran
    Atacama
    La Guajira
    Sechura
    Monte
    Colorado
    Ramlat
    Piscinas
    Rangipo
    Kyzyl Kum
    Kara Kum

And those are just the ones I found interesting. Here is an entire list of all the world's deserts...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deserts

You could also do fish species - I've seen that in some towns built up because of proximity to a lake - Bass Avenue, Waleye Way, Guppy Street.

If you have a tropical paradise, look up what birds and reptiles might be there. Sea Turtle Grange would be a cool one :)

Have something up in the mountains - mountain range names. There's tons of those. Something that is a city - then why not chose city names.

    Boston Boulevard
    New York Strip
    Las Vegas Parkway
    San Diego Drive

Rocks would be an interesting thing to name streets after -

    Gold Dust Circle
    Granite Ridge Road
    Feldespar Terrace

Those are what I can come up with right now :)

    God Bless,
    mik

Out here in the wild west of Las Vegas, I live in a development called Copperhead. I guess they fashioned it after the old west as some of the streets have names like:
    Smoking Gun Court
    Bronco Billy Way
    Wagon Wheel Cir
    Copperkeg
    Defiance
When we were picking out the house and where it was to be placed, I told my husband there was no way I was living on Bronco Billy Court.
In my house, dog hair sticks to everything but the dog.

dont recall seeing [on this thread] rise and hill as typical endings.

eg - Long Hill is a road in our area

In some place they use native/indigenous words for street and town names.

eg North America : eg Squamish, Niagra, ...etc
    Australian : Joondalup, Kakadu, Burrendah

You are missing a street name; it is called Close (As in 11 Consort Close which is another word for dead end.)

I'f your creating a world carelessly you could name Glitch ave and have that street horribly paved and every house on it have some sort of books shelf or chair merged with itself so it flashes.

In the UK, street names tend to be named by the use and shape and formation of the buildings adjoining it.

    For example:
    - Way, - Drive, - Lane, tend to be small streets, mostly residential
    - Circle, is often commercial, where buildings form around a roundabout
    - Crescent, quite often residential, a semi circle formation of terrace (row) houses, the most famous example being the Royal Crescent in Bath.
    - Green, - Common, tend to be in low density residential areas where the surrounding houses overlook a park green or large public lawn.
    - Close, don't tend to conform to a road, instead, a road shoots off a road, with an open car park at the end, and houses (mostly terrace) surround and encompass it, without any strict adherence to pattern)

I use to use Google maps to find road names in different areas. You can go down to street level and see all the road names on the maps - anywhere they offer google maps.
