I have been thinking of starting a new Let's Play with a foster mom, and decided to go ahead and right up some rules. That way I stay consistent and others can try it if they wish! The goal is to raise 10 adopted "foster" children from baby to young adult while leveling the Homemaker profession from
Nraas. The money from the career is analogous to the stipend real foster parents get from the government. That's why I'm calling it a foster care challenge instead of an adoption challenge, as IRL you pay big money to adopt rather than the government paying you.
Rules
- Start out as a single YA who immediately joins the Homemaker profession.
- You must adopt ("foster") a baby before the end of the first day.
- You are not allowed to make money through painting, writing, collecting, etc your job is to care for the family and home.
- The exception is having a small garden, as gardening earns homemaker experience.
- You are not allowed to use a maid, butler, repairman, or babysitter. Police and firefighters are okay.
- You are not allowed to travel without all children or go on the free vacation opportunity.
- Children must stay as babies for at least 2 days. Toddlers can be aged up once they learn the three toddler skills, children/teens once you get the message that they are on the honor role.
- You must teach toddlers their skills personally rather than using the premium content. You can only put them in the walker/playpen after they have learned walking/talking. Swings are okay since they don't teach any skills.
- Children are allowed to learn money making skills and teens are allowed to get part time jobs.
- Every time you get promoted you must adopt a new baby. If the house is full adopt a new baby as soon as the eldest ages to a YA and moves out.
- You don't have to move children out immediately after becoming YA unless you need the room, but they are not allowed to get full time jobs.
- The challenge ends once you are promoted to level 10 of the profession and your 9th child ages to YA.
I think that's it! I may come back and edit this over the next few days if I remember any rules I forgot to include. I haven't decided yet if you are allowed to take a spouse or have biological children. IRL most foster families have two parents I think and can have biological children, but having a spouse would make things much easier from a financial perspective. What do you think?
The mod used in my challenge is now available for download! It is the same as the Nraas Homemaker mod, only it goes up to 10 levels instead of 5. There are two versions, the casual one which I personally use and a challenging mode. We have been given the okay from Nraas to post these and they've also been thoroughly tested.

Yeah I know but I have a hard time handling more than 8 so I think I'll just stick to that. Thanks for the tip, though!

I hope there is less white noise in this video than normal! I went through a lot to try and fix it, since I edited and saved the video before I found out about audacity and basically had to re-do it.

Super glad you posted the rules. I thought I was going to have to re-watch the 1st video and manually write them down!
Oh, poor Aldo got the loser trait! It could prove to be fun to play, though. Looking forward to the next foster child! It will be interesting to see how challenging things become as the number of kids start to add up!
I had to write them down so I would remember them myself. In fact I printed off this page so I could reference them if needed.
Yes, poor Aldo. I hope the kids at school don't make fun of him. I am also excited to see the next foster child! I normally record on Fridays to have it posted on Saturdays but I almost want to record it now haha. I might would if I wasn't so exhausted from going to the pool yesterday.
Also, it sounds like there will never be an household beyond 8 before someone is booted out. Just saying because the Nraas mod will allow for more than sims in a household.
Is this correct?
Just asking, because I decided that I wanted to build a bare bones house specifically for this challenge to get started. "bare bones" because obviously the sim involved with the profession will have have few simoleons to begin with.
Once I have your answer, I can finish up the lot and then upload it to the exchange.

If you would like to have more than 8 in your household I won't rule against it, I just don't like taking care of that many sims at one time so 8 is my personal limit. I'm not sure this would even be an issue depending on your lifespan as it seems it will take longer and longer to get promoted, spacing children out naturally.
@frozenorangejuic - Woo!!! Am so glad a new Episode came out! Have been waiting for a week for the new baby! Popping the popcorn so I can settle into watching!
Thanks for the info on the rules. I didn't think those things would be allowed (collecting/flower picking), but thought I'd ask.
I don't want to have more than 8 in my household! 8 is more than enough, Lol! I was just trying to figure out how to structure the house I'm building for the challenge. Almost finished!
Just curious, I may have missed it in one of your posts... But am assuming your lifespan is set to Normal. I know I will set mine to Normal once I get around to this challenge (hopefully tomorrow, Sunday), although I usually play with a customized Life Span depending on the intention of my game.
@Jaceigh ! - Always so nice to see your cuddly Panda self on a post! Hope your Spring garden is growing at full force! And please give Big Hugs to your little Yorkie babies, Tikki and Tobie! I'm sure they will give you big slurpy kisses back!
@friday027 I play on a modified normal lifespan of 100 days rather than 90 (I think that's what is normal). I just like the round 100 days better. For both this and Professional Woohooer I have it set for Baby - 2, Toddler - 5, Child - 8, Teen - 14, YA - 23, Adult - 30, Elder - 18. I shortened the baby and toddler stages a little because a) babies are boring and b) I knew I would be aging up toddlers early and wanted the other kids in town born around the same time to age up closer to the same time.

Hi @frozenorangjuic -
Another Great Episode! Completely enjoyed it!
I've already started this Challenge and left you a PM regarding my game.
Thought I would post a specific question here, though. I know that collecting is off limits for bringing in additional income.
I know it's okay to consign vegetables grown in the garden. I've noticed you selling some of Aldo's paintings, and in the last episode, took one of his paintings to the consignment store.
But, this is my biggest question... My eldest foster child, Emile, loves to fish. Is it okay to consign fish caught by the kids?
Great! I have not consigned the fish yet, but will do so once I go back into game.
One thing that came up though, was that one of the kids had the school opportunity to collect insects to increase their school performance. Of course, I did the challenge since school performance helps my homemaker. What I didn't think about, though, was that when the kids turn in the insects they get paid... So, after the child completed the challenge by "collecting" the insects and got the school performance boost, I deducted the $$ reward.
I just have to let you know, this is VERY SUPER FUN to play and is Highly Recommended!!!
