It would be much better if foundations were attached to specific rooms, rather than the entire lot, although I suspect that this may not be possible and that, even if it were, introducing such a change at this stage would mess up our existing builds. I would love to be wrong, but I don't hold out much hope.
I love the different wall heights, but I wish we could use different wall heights for different rooms/buildings/sections of a house on the same level. It would make buildings look much more realistic. We used to be able to create this effect in Sims 3, by using different foundation heights and/or by adding a "frieze" layer on top of some rooms, although It was an unwieldy method and it was impossible to make adjacent rooms with different foundation heights, unless you used complicated cheats (which often ended up making your walls look weird anyway). A lot of us complained about this at the time and I really thought it would be one of the things that would be addressed in the next iteration of the game.
We need indoor platforms again, such as they gave us in Sims2. I can't possibly duplicate a house my best friend once owned the way things are now. You entered going up a mere two steps to a hallway/foyer. From there you went through an arch on the left to the bathroom and two bedrooms on either side at the end of said hall. Then, turning right, you stepped down into the livingroom. Stepped up to the dining room and another bedroom off of this. Straight through to the kitchen. Then stepped down to the laundry room and back door. It was a darling house.
If they do this they also need to fix stairs. Stairs are a nightmare. And with the way stairs are now, there is no way we could have different rooms with different foundations. There needs to make a way to stretch stairs from the ground to a room/patio, and from room to room.
There's already a mechanic where the player can determine whether or not a fence has a foundation, depending on which direction the fence is 'drawn'. Couldn't the same mechanic be used for adding additional rooms and out buildings?

The possibility of also completely removing the foundation so that only the floor is left floating should be also included if they ever decide to improve foundations. With this, players could possibly build things such as bridges over pools.
I agree that we need this! I want to build a farmhouse with a wrap-around porch and a barn for animals but I am stuck with either the barn being on a foundation, which just doesn't make sense, or with the farmhouse not having a foundation and therefore no porch either. It would be perfect if we could give individual foundations to individual rooms. I hope that maybe they'll include this with the cats and dogs patch but I'm not holding my breath.
yeah, me too! my barn has a foundation, and it drives me nuts!
I'm so old, I remember when "hashtags" were called POUND SIGNS.
I've been trying to re-create my parent's house... It's missing a ground-level shed, L-shaped staircase, and a staircase that goes under the other staircase (which would lead to the basement). The garage I'm alright with because I deleted the floor and put in a step down from the garage-to-house door, which is how the actual house is.
@MadGod, if I understand you correctly, you would like to put stairs directly under each other -- as it would be in an apartment staircase, for example? If so, that is possible in TS4. We're all still waiting on the rest.
@GalacticGal, platforms would be amazing. Platforms of different heights would send me into a swoon with all the possibilities.
I can't build Japanese houses without platform floors, wish we have it since base game, but still nothing!!! Platform can be useful in many kinds of buildings. And i need more kind of stairs and doors in game too. Else balcony and etcetcetc. This is really sad that they are give so little attention to building options in game. There are so many things what we do not have, but really need, under building category.
Hopefully this gets added. They already added Toddlers for everyone and everyone said that was never going to happen, so lets make the impossible happen again. (also spiral staircases) THANK YOU! :)
I have been hoping for this with every patch. So far, no luck. I miss foundations and ponds so much!
I really suspect that it is not even possible with the way the game engine/mechanics.

Why can't we still have separate foundations? I want to build a garage, a shed, an atelier, etc. It has been three years and this has been an issue since the release of TS4! I'm getting really desperate!
I don't know if this has been said before as I just saw your comment in the "best of" - but I did stumble on a youtube video which was a tutorial on how to the split levelling and I am currently watching a "not so berry challenge" and one house she's played in has a split level down to a fancy living room
Not only this, but wall size matching has to stop too. It'd go hand in hand with the foundation issue. I have medium walls on my house and wanted small walls on the gazebo in the back yard, but nope. It has to copy the walls already on the lot and the gazebo is a huge tall unsightly thing in such a small space. Sounds like the build mode needs a serious update all the way around.

You can kind of do split leveling in the game, but the foundation will always be there. You can't build realistic garages and stuff.
I want to be able to build a house on a foundation, and a garden shed in the back yard without a foundation! Who puts foundations on their garden sheds?
I have been playing The Sims since 2001, when Livin Large came out. My avatar deliberately looks like Chris Roomies from TS1.

Now that we have round roofs (Finally! Hurrah!) I'd like round rooms to be easier to make.
