Chapter one:
Okay folks here goes my attempt at this challenging and fun story challenge:
I was walking down the Street one day and saw this guy living on the Street and begging for money.
Poor Fellow was swept up by our local law enforcement and taken to jail ....."What can I do to help him?" I thought. "Aha, I got a plan!" I got the Community involved and we held a small Pie Baking contest.
We managed to collect 27,535 Simoleons. As the Manager of the "Build a Shelter for the Homeless Fund", I thought it good to come to TS3 Creators Consortium and ask the Creators here to build these poor people a Lovely Cozy Homely Shelter.
As luck would have it, I ran into him at the park the next day. As you can see by his expression, he was not in a receptive mood. I found out he was a bit insane and mean spirited. His told me his name is Otto Doering and that he was down on his luck. His wish is to be a Jack of all Trades but is having trouble holding down a job. It seems that being a tad insane has it's drawbacks. I guess he decided he could trust me and led me to the place he and his family and a few more unfortunate souls had set up camp.
His wife introduced herself as Aura. She had a very kind and warm smile but it was clear living this way was taking a tole on her. There son's name is Adam. A very bright eyed toddler. Both Otto and Aura wanted a fresh start and were at a loss on just how to get back on their feet.
As far as I can tell, there are at least five more souls that need our help. A young woman, three teens and an old man. Everyone is a bit reluctant to tell me their names or much information about the circumstances that led them to be homeless.
They all agreed to come and see the lovely cheer up shelter our friends at TS3 CC volunteered to build for our community. All were greatly impressed and made themselves at home.....by sleeping in actual beds.
The shelter is lovely and has everything that our homeless sims need to make a fresh start. The Teens can now enroll in high school....this makes them all very happy.
This is Xander. So far he has claimed to be a party animal and couch potato.
Kavania is a genius and work alcoholic .I've learned the old man is her grandfather.
Amy is our last teen. She is a self proclaimed hopeless romantic and good. LOL Wonder what she is thinking about??
Beth is a young Widow...not her best photo, she decided to explore the catacombs in the graveyard and ran into a bear...oh my ( wonder if there are any lions and tigers, oh my)
Looks like I've worn out my welcome here at the Cheerup Shelter.....more updates when Otto is in a better mood

To begin where we left off....everyone was sleeping peacefully in their soft , warm, clean beds. Until Adam decided to pretend to be a rooster and wake everyone up at the crack of dawn. No one was amused.
I had explained to our new inhabitants that the goal of this shelter is to make all the families/individuals self sufficient as soon as possible. The group has 21 days to earn enough money to move the first family out of the shelter. Otto volunteered to move his family out first. The next to move will be Kavania and her grandfather three days later, then Beth three days after , then Xander and Amy three days later. This will allow us to fill our shelter again with more of our homeless population. With this in mind, Otto decided to try his hand at firefighting. His ride swung by to escort him to the firehouse.
The teenagers hopped on the bus....all were very glad to be going to school.
Of course the first thing Otto tried out was the trampoline....
Next thing he knew the alarms were going off..He was not happy about being interrupted!
Otto begrudgingly set about putting out the small house fire.....
Instead of going back to the firehouse, Otto went back to the shelter and pulled out his cell phone ( supplied by the shelter) and promptly quit his job. He was starving and the flames looked an awful lot like the nasty firemonster that he is sure is living under his bed!! After a quick meal of cold cereal, Otto went to sleep for the rest of the day....working a few hours really takes a lot out of a guy......interesting dream he is having, isn't it??? Only 20 more days left Mr. Otto Doering!

Early this morning Beth visited her dearly departed husbands grave. She missed him terribly . They had been best friends since early childhood and she had always expected to spend her life with him. They say that time heals all wounds but some how Beth doubted her pain would ever subside.
While Beth was grieving some neighbors decided to drop by for a visit.
The neighbors seemed to make themselves at home and everyone started in their daily routines.
Beth decided to make Mac and Cheese while Amy tried to fix the leak in the kitchen sink, while Otto was daydreaming of eating Beth's Mac and Cheese.....
Xander unclogged a toilet......hey, somebody's gotta do it :P
Otto played with Adam while Aura watched.....He does have his nice moments....he loves his son.....good for you Otto, we knew you weren't all bad.
Kavania and Xander did homework together....you can see Xander's feelings about homework.
Aura took a break from her gardening to take a phone call.
Grandpa tried his hand a painting. Never mind the puddle on the floor...an artist can't be bothered with a little thing like going to the bathroom.. :shock:
Btw, has anyone seen Otto lately?
Uh,Oh...what now? It seems Otto joined a criminal career and was caught by the " Fuzz" during on the job training! Here he is in jail.... :suspect:
Adam has been learning to walk , talk, use the potty and play with blocks and learn his first musical instrument.
Just in time too.....
What a good boy! Washing his own birthday dishes.
The household decided to surprise Adam with a child's oven for his aging up present! He was so excited he ran off to bake some muffins.....
This is where the title comes in....I zoomed in to take a screenshot of Adam and his muffins and GLITCH......blue screen.....game stuck.....had to start this game over.....Not sure if you noticed but the furniture I had in the shelter was not correct. When I started the game I bought the house "unfurnished"....this is wrong. With help from our wonderful members here I was able to start over again. Being sure to buy the shelter furnished this time ( so I started with the correct amount of money left after buying the shelter).

Okay, so let's begin again. You know all the players so we can start almost where we left off....Adam is still a toddler, No one has jobs. Shelter was purchased as furnished (leaving around $22.00 Simoleons in household funds). I am still using Twinbrooke.
We begin with Grandpa trying to improve his cooking skills, his attempt at mac-n-cheese had undesirable results.....
Keviana jumped into action.....first she called the fire department.....too bad Otto quit...wait, he really hasn't started, has he??
With no time to waste, Keviana extinguished the flames herself.
Just as the fireman arrived! He suggested they be more careful when cooking on the stove top....Ummmmm, thanks for the tip!
You know what they say....when it rains it pours...the kitchen sink sprang a leak and Otto sprang into action. Well, I'll be dinged donged! I think our Otto has found his calling....Mr Fix-it!
Aura missed all the excitement. She had been searching around town and found a few seeds to plant in her garden. The usual; apple, lettuce and grape.
With no money saved the household had to forgo replacing the stove/oven, so they made the best of the situation. Ice cream for everyone! Xander struggled with his homework and Beth decided to teach Adam how to walk, it was a bittersweet moment because it reminded her of the loss of her husband and the family they had yearned to start together.
That night, Beth was haunted by her loss and really wished to be able to move on with her life.....things will get better....she keeps telling herself.
While Beth slept, Amy asked Xander to meet her outside, she had something very important to tell him. She couldn't believe her luck! She has a chance to go to Champs Les Sims, France! Xander looked at her like she had gone off the deep end....It was TRUE! All she had to do was interview a local and report back to school with the completed interview and her school work would really improve. She was going to France and seeing how the other half lived!!! Unfortunately, Xander pointed out her lack of simoleons ... it cost around $1,800.00 for a round trip to Champs Les Sims. Oh.... Amy had forgotten that part. He decided that no matter what Amy was going on her trip....someone had to get out of Dodge and see the world. Plus he couldn't stand to see her disappointed, he wasn't sure exactly why her feelings mattered so much to him. Heck, he'd just met her a few days ago.
It was after curfew so Amy rushed back inside before the police showed up. Xander took his time...let the cops come by , what are they going to do? Take his birthday away?? Uh, Oh, something worse than the cops.....Otto!! Xander quickly agreed to go inside when a thought occurred to him......He told Otto about how he heard there was all kinds of loot to be had in Champs Les Sims, France. Gems, insects, minerals, and best of all TREASURE! This peaked Otto's interest but what did it matter, they weren't anywhere near France. That's when Xander told Otto of Amy's opportunity to go to Champs Les Sims, all they needed was to scrape up enough money to get her a round trip ticket. Hmmmmm, it would be a huge risk but it may be a risk worth taking.
Will Amy get to go to France? How will they earn enough money to send her? And most importantly, if she does go will she be able to find enough loot to put them on easy street??

"What am I going to do?" Amy thought as she rummaged through a random trashcan. The garbage was really stinky and slimy......it made Amy's stomach flip over but she really had no choice, she needed something to sell for some quick Simoleons. Ugggggggggg, she saw the red lights flashing but it was too late.
"Come with me Young Lady" said the Officer. He wanted to know where Amy lived but she would not tell him. There was absolutely no way she was going back to that house....it hadn't been her home for a very long time.
It had been a long and silent ride back to the police station and the Officer had finally given up on trying to pry any information out of Amy...she wouldn't even tell him her name so he called her "Little Miss" and this brought a small tear to her eye. She hadn't heard that for a long time...it is what her Daddy called her. Her Daddy.....NOT her Step-Father.
As Amy lay her head back against the worn vinyl front seat, she closed her eyes and thought of her Daddy. She could smell the soap on his skin and see his twinkling blue eyes looking back at her. When was the last time she actually saw him... "How old was I, three???" she spoke out loud, she quickly looked towards the officer but he was busy speaking with the dispatcher and hadn't heard her.
It was a warm, sunny day in Twinbrooke and they had spent the day tending their plot in the city garden. Amy loved being their with her parents, they were always singing as they harvested the fresh produce.
Just as they had gotten home and were settling in for a quite afternoon of relaxation, the phone rang and her Daddy had been called into work....
As he left, her Daddy picked her up and hugged her so tightly . Did he somehow know that would be the last time they would be together? Amy could hear her Mother say," Kent! Be careful, don't squeeze her so hard." He just laughed, " Oh, come on Deb....she wont break, will you my Little Miss ?" He gave her a kiss on her forehead and he walked out the door.
Amy's Mommy was reading her favorite book to her when the door bell rang. There was a stranger at the door and he was telling Mommy something and she was very upset. She sat down and cried for a very long time.
This strange man kept coming back to visit and he soon became Amy's Step-Father. Damion is his name and he is part of the reason Amy left home and is in this terrible mess. After her father died, her mother could hardly look at her and she seemed to be totally dependent on Damion. While Amy was little Damion tolerated her... but just barely.
As soon as Amy aged up to a Teen Damion was mean and hateful to her, no matter what she did, and he took every opportunity to degrade her . Amy looked to her mother for support but didn't find any. She knew if she was going to survive she had to leave....so that is exactly what she did.
After a long but peaceful night in the local lockup she was walking through the park and saw a interesting looking boy....the kind her mother had warned her about staying away from....all the more reason to introduce herself. She found out his name was Xander and he knew of a nice place she could stay.......
Thank you for indulging my little back story.... I know this isn't really part of the challenge but I just felt like expanding a little since there is no time limit . The black and white screenshots are "memories" she is having and Damion is in color because it is the present...

( day two)
Otto rose at the crack of dawn and headed to the most secluded fishing spot he could find, he needed some time to think of about Amy's trip to France. Everyone had been fishing, gathering produce , and gems and minerals and cashing them in for simoleons. They had just a little under two thousand dollars saved. At this rate, no one was going to make it out of the shelter on schedule.
After selling his fresh catch to the local market , he saw Victor already harvesting onions at the community gardens. He just talked to the clerk and knew that apples were in great demand, no time like the present Otto....he joined Victor and they both sold their bounty.
Aura was there too and had just picked a bumper crop of tomatoes, Cha Ching!!
That afternoon they held the first ever Cheer Up Shelter Family Vote and all voted in favor to send Amy on her trip to Champs Les Sims, France. Amy was sooooo excited! Otto pulled her aside and reminded her that she needed to grab as much loot as she could and to be sure to hand it all over when she got back!
First thing Amy did was to check out all the available adventures....there were so many ! After she gathered her wits about her she remembered she needed to complete the interview for school before she did anything else.
To her complete surprise she was given a complimentary scooter to use during her stay in France! How cool is that!
This first thing she spotted was a " sliver-spotted skipper butterfly"...whoa....that should make Otto happy! She knew from her studies that this was a "rare" butterfly and the science facility in Twinbrooke was always in the market for exotic donations! She tucked it safely in her "inventory".
Something about spanning the globe make a girl hungry! Amy hopped on her scooter, she loves driving this thing, and buzzed back to base camp for a quick bite.
"Oh, my stars! Look at this kitchen!" Amy thought it had to be as big as the entire Cheer Up Shelter!
Being the natural cook that she is, she couldn't pass up the opportunity to prepare a meal in a French Kitchen....wait until she told Beth! She knows Beth's LTW is to be a Celebrated 5-star Chef and she wants to visit France too.
"Great Scott! Look at the time!" Amy knew she'd better get moving if she wanted to complete her school assignment and still have plenty of time to search for more treasure....she didn't want to let the others down...everyone had been working so hard to build up the simoleons in the fund. The first person she ran into was another traveler. They had a nice chat but it didn't help her much. He did point her in the right direction and for that she was very thankful.
Will Amy complete her assignment in time? Will she find enough "loot" to satisfy Otto? Will Xander even miss her while she is gone? The future of her new family is riding on her shoulders and she doesn't want to disappoint any of them..especially Xander!

Just as Amy was leaving called after her he had forgotten to introduce himself. His name was Ri Hui Wan and he was from China. It seems he had a bit of local gossip to share. A local historian needs help with a history paper on nectar. If you interview Adele Durand you can report your findings to the Special Merchant and recieve Ancient Coins and Visa Points! Amy wasn't sure how much the ancient coins would be worth but knew the visa points would allow her to stay longer on her next adventure. Ri Hui Wan gave her directions to the home of Madame Durand and Amy wasted no time beginning her task. This would be fantastic, she could not only complete this adventure but it would also fulfill her school obligation!
As Amy approached she noticed the lovely flower beds that surrounded the home and saw a lovely woman taking great care in tending them. It reminded her of her Mother and she could almost hear the sweet melody she use to hum. The woman felt she was being watched and turned and greeted Amy with a warm smile. " Bonjour, Mademoiselle." Amy, was happy she could speak a little of the native dialect and began the conversation with a compliment about the home's gardens.
Adele was happy to give Amy many of her gardening secrets. She filled Amy in on all the local traditions and folk lore.
They shared local gossip.
Made silly faces and told a few funny stories.
Adele then offered the information Amy needed for the Special Merchant. They vowed to keep in touch, and Adele gave Amy a few articles of clothing that she no longer had any need for....what luck! Amy Thanked her new friend and continued on her quest.
She quickly found the woman she was looking for and gave her the much needed information. Ancient Coins and Visa points collected and Amy was ready for more adventure!
Suddenly Amy was overwhelmed with fatigue and made her way back to base camp. She took a moment to unpack her new clothing and carefully put it away in the dresser. She couldn't believe how lovely the base camp was....her eyes grew heavy and she fell fast alseep.
After a full nights sleep, a quick meal and decked out in her new clothes Amy was ready to look for another adventure...
She checked the board and saw that Andre Lefebvre needed some assiatance...
After a friendly introduction , Andre told her he had been exploring the Forgotten Burial Mound and had been called back to work suddenly and in his rush he had left something behind. Would Amy please retrieve it promptly. He would reward her with ancient coins and visa points.
While on her way Amy found a Green Swallowtail Butterfly.
The Burial Mound was very beautiful....now where in the world is the entrance Andre was talking about?
In a very small area of flat land Amy found a dig site and uncovered several artifacts! They were very old an appeared to be in good condition....
As she made her way through the tomb the first thing she came across was a Titianium Ingot!
She cleared a large pile of rubble and found money bags!
Inspected a wall and found a secret passage way that led to a strange tile in the floor she stepped on it and it opened another passage way.....Wow did something smell in here! Amy Looked around and realized the smell was coming from.....her! She'd better use her 'shower -in -a -can" soon.

Beth took a deep breath and told herself she could do this....it was only an autumn salad for goodness sake! She could do this in her sleep. Her hand started to shake as she reached for the yellow pepper. " Get a grip, Mick". Beth spun around.....who said that.....no one was in the kitchen with her. She felt a shiver trickle down her slender spine. It couldn't be....could it?? " NO!" She needed to get a hold of herself. Ramsay was gone. That was that. She had seen countless ghosts floating around this sleepy town but never her beloved husband.
It had been the day she had "aged up to a child" that she first met Ramsay. It was another warm, sunny, perfect day ( as always ...weird, isn't it...but that is a whole other story =P) in Riverview. Her Grandmother, Betsy, had given her a toy oven so she could start mastering her cooking skills. They spent the morning baking blueberry muffins and were just finishing up a Beth's first ever bake sale( only profited around 50 simoleons but gained much more in experience).
When a teen aged Ramasy strolled up to the table. He inhaled a large breath and proclaimed that he had never smell such a wonderful aroma coming from a yard before....she could still see the twinkle in his eye and the silly little grin on his face. She thanked him and he bought the remainder of her muffins. This became a weekly ritual that summer of her childhood. Ramsey would stop by and check out her new creations and give her tips on what could make them just a bit better. He started calling her Mick then. "Hello my dear Mick, what heavenly morsel have you made for me this week." They became good friends and as Beth "aged up to a teen" she began to have romantic feelings for Ramsay. Of course, as men usually are, Ramsay was totally oblivious of Beth's feelings. He suddenly announced one day that he was leaving for Champs Les Sims, France to study the wonders of French cooking. He was so excited, Beth had to be happy for him. Even while her heart was breaking she wished him well, and they promised to keep in touch. They did for a while but as things usually go, the letters became fewer and farther between. Eventually, they stopped all together.
One warm, sunny, perfect day.... Beth was in such a rush to deliver her newest muffins to the diner, when she walked right into what felt like a solid tree. As she was a bit dazed, a strong arm reached out to balance her. "Oh, excuse me.....then her voice trailed off. She'd recognize that silly smile anywhere. " Ramsay?" whispered Beth in disbelief. Ramsay stood there....frozen. "Mick?" he said in a horse voice....
Before Beth could stop herself, she gave Ramsay a shy kiss. As their lips met , electricity surged through their bodies. Time stood still for both of them. Ramsay could not believe that this beautiful vision standing before him was his little Mick. He decided at that very moment Beth would be his wife by the end of the day. They quickly gathered up the forgotten muffins and shoved them into the owner's hands. Laughing, they rushed to the nearest boutique and found the perfect wedding dress for Beth and a dapper tux for Ramsay. He talked Beth into making an appointment at the day spa and while she was being pampered, Ramsay popped into the local consignment shop to find a wedding band for his lovely bride. As luck would have it a sim down on his luck had just pawned the most perfect ring. Ramsay felt bad about buying it at first but the clerk assured him that the sim needed the simoleons . He had been seriously injured by a robber who had broken into his home and this would greatly help him pay the bills and keep his young family in their home. Feeling of clear conscious, Ramsay purchased the ring and quickly spun around and changed into his tux. He and Beth arrived at the park at dusk.
The sent of magnolias wrapped around them while a lone sim strummed her guitar in the park. Ramsay took Beth in his arms as they exchanged their vows of love and marriage. Both were overwhelmed with happiness and a peace neither had felt before in their lives.
They sealed their commitment with a single kiss.
If there ever was a perfect moment, this was it.
They began their life together by joining a culinary career at the very diner they "ran into" each other after all these years apart. The days and nights were long but it there was nothing either wanted more than to become legendary 5-star chefs....except, of course, having a family of their own someday.
When they weren't working together, they were cooking together.
Ramsay was an adventurous cook, always trying new combinations......some not so good. Beth worried about his recklessness but supported her husband's creativity. He had this idea for a first course that he felt would bring him to the forefront of the culinary world in record fashion.
They had hoped to expand their small kitchen but with Ramsay's experiments occurring every day, the cost of replacing the stove, pots and pans were holding back that dream.
This made no difference to Beth....she was so thankful to have her husband.
Ramsay left for work one morning. Unbeknown to Beth, he had been up all night perfecting his special dish. He just needed to put the final touches on it at the diner....Tonight would be the big reveal!!
Tears were streaming down Beth's face and she was gripping the olive oil so tightly her had was cramping. You see, her beloved Ramsay had perished in a terrible fire at the diner. No one was quite sure how it started. He had gone into work before their shift, he had given Beth a quick squeeze and rushed off. No lingering kiss, long embrace.....how could a love like this stop so suddenly, how could she have not known the exact moment that Ramsay had left her? She had stayed in their home for a few months but the simoleons ran out and she couldn't pay the bills. That darn repoman had no sense of humanity. Each month he would take more and more until there was nothing left. Beth left Riverview for good. Some how she winded up with these good folks here and she would do every thing she could to help all of them. They knew nothing of her grief and she planned to keep it that way. They had drawn straws last night and she was the one going on the next adventure. After everyone had gone to sleep she changed the highlights in her hair and vowed to start living and loving her life again. Ramsay would want her to.
Where will Beth go? How much loot can she find to give them all a fresh start?? Will she ever be able to cook or love again??

(day three)
The cool morning air felt good as Beth jogged down the silent street. She imagined her neighbors were just rising and getting ready to begin their days. A shiver of excitement passed through her as she thought of her upcoming adventure. They had decided she would travel to Shang Simla, China. It was going to cost $1,300.00 Simoleons and there was no guarantee that Beth would be able to bring any ***** back to her friends. She took a deep breath and sprinted down the sidewalk home.
Meanwhile, Victor applied for a part-time job at the local supermarket. He needed to supplement his fishing and painting income. The manager decided to take a chance on him and Victor would start the next afternoon.
Otto was giving fishing a little more time to bring in some major simoleons before applying for a job. This really seemed to calm his anxiety. He was not ready to jump back into the rat race just yet. He didn't know if he would ever be able to let go of his disappointment that had led him and his family to be homeless.
As Beth left in the cab for the airport, the kids headed for school. Adam is always the last on and He can never be seen in the bus but his little green plumbob shows so Aura knows he is safe.
After returning from town,Victor opened his paints and picked up his brush. It seems to him that he had done this before but a very long time ago....He would ask Keviana, she would know. For some reason he had trouble remembering certain things. For example, where is his wife? And Keviana's Parents? Didn't she have a sister too? Oh...his head was beginning to hurt. He looked at the painting and the pain started to subside....he was lost in the swirls of pigment....
Otto had remembered to save one fish for Amy from his daily catch before trading it for simoleons, she needed to turn one in to the science lab to improve her grades at school. He stuck in the the fridge and headed to the shower to wash up. "Arrrrrrggggg, the sink is on the fritz again. Otto tried to fix it himself but it kept springing a leak so he gave in and called a repairman....said he'd be here within the hour. He hesitated when he turned on the shower, it had a habit of breaking too.....whew, it's working....for now!
Time for homework...these two seem to find any excuse to be near each other.
Keviana had the opportunity to fix the boiler at school to improve her grades.....extra credit was always worth doing!
Amy tore herself away from Xander just long enough to deliver the fish Otto gave her to the Science Lab.
Aura had spent the entire day in her garden. She planted five unknown seeds and had two more in her inventory that she couldn't plant until she increased her gardening skill level. She would talk to the group about buying some much needed skill books. They all would benefit from reading them. Just as she was about to leave for the market , Beth called. She had made her last connection and would be in China soon. Aura envied Beth so much. She knew her chance would come soon but the waiting wasn't easy.
Well, Well. Look who finally showed up....wonder if he knows the cable guy???
What will Beth find in China? Will our residents be able to build their skills high enough to support themselves on their own? Why is Otto so bitter? Will he be able to move past it? Is Victor just suffering from senility or is it something more? Only time will tell, my friends...
