It is wonderful to see you all sharing on this thread so we have current information based on your experiences. Many of us finished our store collection back in 2014 and some of our experiences will be different from how the DD works today.
Greetings! Just would like to say thank you @rnramey and @Me1620 (plus everyone else) for this thread and the spreadsheet! I use the spreadsheet to plan ahead, but like to come to this thread for the tips, or if anything catches my eye, as I do check the DD page multiple times just to see what's out there and if people are buying it.
@LauraBow - It is a pleasure to still be helping simmers plan out their DD shopping. Thank you for acknowledging rnramey and myself. I want to also acknowledge @angeljess26. She has been a part of this thread for as many years as I have. She regularly answers questions and also keeps an eye on the spreadsheet.
2. As I acquire more item, sets, and compilations, does it matter how they're installed in my game? Is it better to install a whole compilation, or the individual sets that belong to it? I've installed some individual items and then later the full sets after getting them, and so far not seeing an impact in-game, though it'd probably help to remove "duplicates" from the Downloads folder to reduce its size.
I followed Ciane's method which this exception. Ciane installed compilations rather than installing the sets included in a compilation separately so she would lessen the number of installations; 1 compilation rather than 2 or more sets. I preferred to install the sets or combination sets rather than the compilations for one reason. The in-game catalogue shows icons of the sets and groups the items included in the set as a collection. If I installed the compilation, the compilation icon is shown with the sets all included in the collection. As an example, Ciane would install April 2013 Compilation. I preferred to install its sets, Tutor of Tudors and Country Livin' separately so that my in-game catalogue showed the two sets separately. It is easier for me to see a photo of Country Livin' if I want items from that set rather than remembering to look for April 2013 compilation. In the case of this compilation, the item from the two sets have nothing in common other than being released in the same month.
While you are actively buying items, I think it may be easier for now to continue what you are doing so you can enjoy the items rather than wait to install them after you own the set or compilation. However, I would suggest that once you own all the items you care to own, start fresh by creating a new Sims 3 folder and follow Ciane's method.
The Downloads folder is not where the items are installed into. The Sims3pack files are stored in the Downloads folder but the installation process installs the package files in the DCCache and DCBackup folders. Ciane explains this in her thread. Removing the files from the Downloads folder does not uninstall the items from your game.

I took some time over the last couple days to double-check some CYS calculations on a few of my planned purchases, and I'm glad I did since it let me drop 2 purchases, saving me 105 SP.
I'm glad I have my CYS spreadsheet to do the hard parts of such a task for me. Makes me appreciate more the work Merelhyn and others did in the past, and shows me how valuable the Python program I'm working on can be (to those few of us still stalking the Store at least).

Yes, I was thinking of doing this! I buy things and want to see them in my game right away, but will likely just have a complete do-over at some point, using the compilations vs. sets method you and @SpiredMoth mentioned.

@LauraBow - It is a pleasure to still be helping simmers plan out their DD shopping. Thank you for acknowledging rnramey and myself. I want to also acknowledge @angeljess26. She has been a part of this thread for as many years as I have. She regularly answers questions and also keeps an eye on the spreadsheet.
I followed Ciane's method which this exception. Ciane installed compilations rather than installing the sets included in a compilation separately so she would lessen the number of installations; 1 compilation rather than 2 or more sets. I preferred to install the sets or combination sets rather than the compilations for one reason. The in-game catalogue shows icons of the sets and groups the items included in the set as a collection. If I installed the compilation, the compilation icon is shown with the sets all included in the collection. As an example, Ciane would install April 2013 Compilation. I preferred to install its sets, Tutor of Tudors and Country Livin' separately so that my in-game catalogue showed the two sets separately. It is easier for me to see a photo of Country Livin' if I want items from that set rather than remembering to look for April 2013 compilation. In the case of this compilation, the item from the two sets have nothing in common other than being released in the same month.
While you are actively buying items, I think it may be easier for now to continue what you are doing so you can enjoy the items rather than wait to install them after you own the set or compilation. However, I would suggest that once you own all the items you care to own, start fresh by creating a new Sims 3 folder and follow Ciane's method.
The Downloads folder is not where the items are installed into. The Sims3pack files are stored in the Downloads folder but the installation process installs the package files in the DCCache and DCBackup folders. Ciane explains this in her thread. Removing the files from the Downloads folder does not uninstall the items from your game.

Yes, I was thinking of doing this! I buy things and want to see them in my game right away, but will likely just have a complete do-over at some point, using the compilations vs. sets method you and @SpiredMoth mentioned.

Ah, I wondered about that. Seems like clicking on "Show file" in the Launcher takes me to the Downloads folder, or that's what I remember, so my brain thinks that is where everything goes.
