I had this problem, went through all the suggestions, and FINALLY got my save to load after deleting all sims except my main family. It took a while of loading-testing-restarting but I pinpointed the problem as the teen girl's boyfriend. For some reason he was bugging out the game. Deleted him and everything was fine. And since I created him, he was saved in my library and very easy to replace and get them back together.
Thank you @crinrict and @rosemow! Even though you didn't help me specifically, your replies to others and suggestions to them did. You guys are awesome for trying to help everyone.
Close down your game
Start your game and load the faulty save game
Go to the family you have last played with and go straight to build mode
Delete any easel/drawing tables including unfinished paintings
Go back to map view
Load your family
Another simmer found that the bath and shower from Spa Day was causing an issue so going straight to build mode and removing that may help also.
Also try doing this and see if that helps. Evict your last played household from their home, bulldoze their home, then place another home on the lot. Then put the household back into the home.
You will lose their home but may be able to keep the save game file.
If that doesn't help, try resetting your sims 4 folder and see if that helps. To do that, move your sims 4 folder ( that is in Documents -Electronic Arts - then the sims 4 folder is there ) to the desktop. Then start the game, and a new sims 4 folder will be generated. Start a new game and test to see if the issues have been fixed. Then exit the game. Add back the "options.ini" file, "screenshots" "tray" "custom music " and "mods" folders to the new sims 4 folder, replacing the new generated file/ folders with the old file/folders.
Don't add back the " saves folder ", but keep that in a safe place. Your game will be working now.
If you would like to try to recover the save games that are in saves folder , go to your saves folder that is on your desktop, and put one .save file back into the folder, ( not the ones that end in .save.ver ) go to the load button ( the one with the file image) in the main screen in the game, load the game and see if it works. Then take that file out and try another .save file. Every file that works, is a game file that you will be able to keep in the game.
Don't put the slot_00000001.save file. back into the folder because that is the autosave, and that could be the cause of the issue.
check your mods folder if you have the packing crate by scumbumbo then remove that my problem is adding fish in the aquarium when i return from the spa the fish dissapeared then i have to restock again
Hello @Reaper5901. Thankyou for letting us know about your issue with the packing crate mod and your adding of fish to the aquarium.
I just found out about the issue this morning. The packing crate mod has been updated to fix that issue so it's safe to run with Spa Day again.
I'm getting this issue now too, I don't have any mods and only have the deluxe edition and GTW. I've already repaired my game and it didn't help, very frustrating and disappointing.
For reference, I dug up a backup of the previous version of Sims 4 (1.8.61) and my supposedly broken save loads perfectly. Both with and without mods. So I now really think this, at least in my specific case, is a newly introduced bug in the 1.9 update.
(Makes me really wish TS4 didn't need Origin, BTW; if I could just reinstall and update to an arbitrary patch level, like I can with TS3, it would be far easier to wait on a previous patch while EA fixes their own broken update, without having to go offline every time I want to avoid updating.)
I just encountered this issue earlier today. It would seem what probably caused mine was a landscape painting in progress on an easel when I sent another sim traveling to a different lot. They arrived on that lot just fine it was when I had them leave that one to travel to a second lot that the issue occurred.Everything seems to be working fine now.
Just wanting to say a big thank you to those that narrowed down the steps to locating the issue.

I am glad that your game is working okay now It was good that you could find what was causing the issue.
@rosemow thank you, I was able to play again when starting from a completely new folder, but I lost my save , home & family as I didn't have them on the gallery and when I added my save game it wouldn't work again. I guess the cause was somewhere in that family.

Already did all of that. Plus everything Crinrict suggests in his blog post and his answears.ea.com thread about this issue (well, apart from searching each individual family to see if they have a faulty relationship part, too much hassle for something that isn't guaranteed to work). The only thing that worked is saving my household and house to the gallery and then putting them back into a new game.
But, between losing everything that isn't saved with the house and household, the chance of the issue coming back, and the still present relationship bug, I prefer to just restore my backup of the previous game version until EA fixes their game. A pity missing on the new features and not being able to get Spa Day, but having a working game beats new features every time.

I am playing, just not on the latest version; my save file works perfectly on 1.8, a version I could go back to due to my compulsion with making backups of everything ;)

@rosemow I am not sure what my problem was, but I deleted all cache files and save files (I was starting a new legacy anyway) and remained problem free ever since. Hopefully I will stay that way. Thank you for your suggestions.
