I just bought a Windows 8 laptop. So, I'm running the Sims 3 with compatibility mode with windows 8. The game looks really dark and dim. Is there a way to fix it without changing the compatibility mode from windows 8? Please help
This might not be it at all, but most laptops have brightness controls often available right from the keyboard (other times through the Power Options control panel). But I hope you aren't playing the game using the battery rather than plugged into an outlet with the adapter; that's not good for the lappie and by default settings would make the screen dim especially when things are working harder.
@igazor it has nothing to do with the screen brightness since it's just The Sims 3 game having this issue. Whenever I set the game to run in compatibility with Windows 7, or lower, the game crashes whenever I go into map view. This doesn't happen when I set the option to Windows 8. The only problem is that Windows 8 is making the game appear very dark and I would like to know how to fix this issue
@CoolBlueJay902 there's not even any brightness options in The Sims 3 game. I would just like to know how to make the game look normal while running in windows 8 mode since the game tends to crash in any other mode.
Okay, I've just looked around and see that this question has been posted thousands of times by others all over these forums and the web. And the only threads that gave answers that (would have) worked involve switching off compatibility mode, so probably that doesn't make any sense here.
We still have tech responders and a sim guru hanging out in the TS3 technical board right on this forum. Perhaps you could move this thread over there and see if you can get the attention of someone who has a real solution? That is, if there are any real solutions. The game was not originally designed with Win8.x in mind as it hadn't existed yet.
Although you might give checking your lappie's video drivers for an update, if you haven't already done that. And I hope you are running Win 8.1, not Win 8 by now.
@igazor yes I am running windows 8.1. I have googled and searched for answers, but have not found any other answers than to turn off compatibility mode. The problem is that whenever I turn it off, the game tends to crash usually when going into map view. I tried the DEP thing but it didn't stop the crash neither. All my other games like SimCity are running with compatibility to windows 8, and I'm not having this same issue

I understand that. That's why I said the search I did revealed (many) answers that do not make any sense to me either and you should move this thread to the board where the tech responders hang out.
I have tried every advice i could find find in here and Google. Have used Google alot today I am begining to think it may have something to do With me making the game compatible With win xp, and not win 8 ( i used win 8 the first day before it started to crash )I have updated my driver, Windows, changed settings, even tried this advice i found in an old post in here;
If you are playing the game on a laptop and find it goes dark if you had minimised it to the desktop for a moment at any stage for whatever reason, you can prevent this by doing the following before starting up the game again.
1. Right click on your Sims 3 desktop icon.
2. Pick the Compatibility menu folder.
3. On the five "Settings" boxes, tick the one marked "Disable desktop composition".
4. Click "Apply".
So now i dont know what more to do.
@igazor I have been playing the game on battery power rather than having it plugged in. Does it hurt the laptop? This is not the thing that is causing the issue with my laptop since I have a computer that is running sims 3 with windows 8 compatability mode and I'm having the same dimmed game issue
@ceejay402 I cannot see that option "compatibility menu" by right clicking the sims 3 icon. Keep in mind that I am using Windows 8.1
sorry i play with 7 so the OP in that quote was playing with 8 if the changes to 8.1 are that much where when you right click on the icon and get another list of options sorry i cant help further. you yourself said you are playing 7 compatibility is there a reason? it shouldnt be required to do so

Not convinced this is what's causing your current issue, but this game takes way too much processor power to be run on battery if it can be at all avoided. Maybe newer laptops handle this better, but users on some systems tend to report their laptops just shutting off mid-game unexpectedly when they do this, as if they were overheating when really they weren't.
If @ceejay402 and the other responders here don't have an idea for something that works (give them a day or two), you might want to try contacting (shudders) EA tech support to see what they have to say. But you did mention earlier that the dimming only happens in full-screen mode. Is it that unappealing to play in windowed-mode instead?

it is late thanks igazor i will say TreborHG yes you shouldn't play with the laptop unplugged its also possible your settings are also power management sensitive, meaning when unplugged it runs on more power efficient setting that can include lowered lighting. i also have a brightness option on my. i would review all of power energy settings and start playing with it plugged in. even new batteries will drain power to the point that gaming performance can dip
@igazor I hate playing in window mode. The game also seems to lag a lot when not in full screen for whatever reason. I'll contact EA and see what happens.

I'll ask once more can you please share why you are playing in compatible mode to begin with
@ceejay402 Because I noticed that when I turn off the option, the game tends to crash, usually when I go on map view. I noticed the game doesn't crash when compatibility mode is on and set on windows 8. I would only like to see the solution on how to fix the dim/dark image in game
ok can you please post computer specs to post hit windows key + R enter dxdiag run report hit save all info and notepad doc will open copy/paste the whole long report here, and since you have 8.1 break up the report into more than one thread
@ceejay402 I always change my power plan to "high performance" whenever I play a game on my laptop, including sims 3
ok you do realize this doesnt answer my questions if you want help i need for you to give me more details so power setting options as you should see from the link i provided includes brightness this at least on my gaming laptop is separate and distinct from my power set up for my gaming which in short is me setting up my second card to game.
and do please post computers specs so i can help with the crashing. thanks!
@ceejay402 sunkissed300 posted in this thread which includes photos of the same issue I am having with my game. It has nothing to do with how dim the screen is.
one i do think we should try to fix you running the game in compatible mode since your system and OS is more than capable of running it if so we may stop this the dimming issue though it may also be still tied to a setting
re compatible mode, have you always needed to run in in the mode even the first time you played the game? is your systme OS fully up to date and when was the last time you tried to simply launch the game

If that doesn't help, then I don't know.

one i do think we should try to fix you running the game in compatible mode since your system and OS is more than capable of running it if so we may stop this the dimming issue though it may also be still tied to a setting
like i did a quick search of dell and dimming issue and found this http://smallbusiness.chron.com/turn-ambient-light-sensor-dell-53354.html is this something that could be at play?
re compatible mode, have you always needed to run in in the mode even the first time you played the game? is your systme OS fully up to date and when was the last time you tried to simply launch the game
