I need some help with building

So I am making a contemporary/modern style home. I have my floor plans all laid out although I think I will have to do some rearranging, anyway! What I need help with is I'm having some issues making the upstairs landing like a loft type landing. You know where its kinda open to the downstairs. Is there anyway to do this? or am I just being stupid and not getting it. I am really confused as to how I can do this.

I would build walls around the area you want to make the landing, like make it its own separate room temporarily, then delete any part of the floor outside of the area you want to keep. That's the only thing I could think of though. Then just delete the walls around your landing.
