The ONLY kind of "multiplayer"- if you can even call it that- that I would be up for is open world files. As in, a simmer can make world saves and choose to make them private or public, and on a open server, I can choose to have my sim household visit there for like a day, or on vacation if hotels are in the game. I don't want to interact with the actual person or any other real people or have any contact with them, but traveling to different worlds may be cool instead of having to plop a save file into your Sims saved games folder.

Multiplayer can work well and as understood from the news, will be like GTA Onlinr invite-only session, no public session

If the "multiplayer" of Sims 5 is simply visiting eachother like in Sims 3 again... I will be very angry with Sims. That isn't a real multiplayer option. And, it's useless. "Oh, come over to my world so I can show off my house..." Snoozefest! I want to socialize! With real people!

Sharing your creations and stories is the social part. And the forums.
I think they should bring back the in-game storybook feature with the upload to the BBS button like they had in Sims 2. The ratings system got rather nasty sometimes but it was mostly pretty satisfying. Currently with having to pull everything out of the game folder, work on it and transfer onto an external site, navigate all the nuances of that, and sometimes code, is a lot of mucking around. In Sims 2 all you did was organise and write it in the game, and hit the button to upload. Sims 3 has a memory thing but the picture areas were smaller. Sims 4 has the gallery but I didn't think that was any good - and their trailers when the base was getting released kept talking about making stories, what's your story, but there's not a story feature, not like Sims 2.

And then the socialising is on your terms.
The Sims has a unique niche. If people keep trying to blend it with other game's areas it will lose that.
Its like people moving to the country for the quiet life and then advocate for a whole bunch of amenities, services and businesses ... pretty soon more people come and businesses and then its not a quiet place anymore and not really the country.

I remember you from university, I still have your story.

Well, hopefully this will end up being a great thing for those who want multiplayer. They'll definitely need to draw in a new audience (which I imagine is their goal) and that's going to take something awesome. If they draw in enough new players, it won't matter if the majority of long time players don't move on.

I'm not hopeful right now though, every other time they've dipped their toes into other areas that weren't strictly a "normal Sims experience" they've failed. If they pull this off, I'll be amazed. I hated Sims 4 when it came out and didn't give it a second shot until 2019. Now after myriad updates and packs, I enjoy the game. I still play Sims 2 regularly and it's still my favorite, but they managed to suck me into Sims 4. So I guess we'll see.

In this context, I better understand why the Sims is fixated on new boundary-pushing multiplayer features. They want to go big with this next game and expand to players who have never even thought once of playing a sims game. The EA management is pushing them to make a home run like Fortnite. That’s needed to sustain growth and make it to a higher echelon of corporate size and status. They can’t be safe here.

You pose the question: is that even likely for them to achieve? You are 100% right that the track record is concerning.

What is their Achille’s heel? Spending too little emphasis on the fundamentals and stable foundation of the game. And too much time on the next big thing to define the era ahead. Unfortunately, a home run will need both.

I think it's because they view the future as multiplayer. The biggest games have multiplayer elements. I don't think it matters to them that single-player-only players like you exist. EA Sports is EA's most relevant game, clearly, from their earnings calls and financial statements. The Sims Team wants to push out the Sims product to as many new faces as possible. I don't think they're satisfied with the size of the franchise yet. Remember, they made the base game free and Rene will be free upon launch.

I will never let anybody into my game.

I feel the very same way. First of all, at my age, I don't have any friends who play this game. Who, then, am I supposed to play with? Number One. Two, I don't want anybody messing with my Sims. Not even a friend. It's bad enough when people (allegedly family I haven't met) change my family tree in one of those shared trees. I hate having to go back and correct the misinformation they put. I use source records to prove the information I place in the tree. Can you even imagine someone changing something about the Sim you created in CAS? Now, I don't know for a fact, this would or even could happen, but it troubles me, even so.

I've never played Animal Crossings, but it looks like Renee might be creating a shared space separate from your private space.
I am pretty sure multi-player co-op is a done deal. It would be nice for simmers who want co-op and multiplayer to play with friends and family.

However, I will be sitting on the sidelines waiting to see how it plays out.
They should not have to use manipulative tactics to get people to try multiplayer if they are building it for the people who want to play multiplayer. They will gravitate to it naturally.

But if their monetization is built on getting more single players to try multiplayer and they start using tactics such as denying access to content unless you play multiplayer, then it is a no-go for me.
