from The Sims 3 Generations Launch Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR1Fl8DBOqg&feature=digest

Three teens are egging this man's house. He comes out wearing this? Anyone else think this a little bit homophobic at least?

***added for clarification: I'm not horribly upset about it but just wished to share my thoughts and hear other's thoughts about it. I love to analyze things especially the subtle messages in the media and was wondering how others feel on this particular topic and image.

Let me clarify...I was a little bit upset when I noticed this. It comes off as they are picking on him for being, at the very least, in touch with his feminine side if not being gay. Why did EA pick that kind of victim?

Please watch the video and feel free to share your thoughts.

I think the devs just thought it would be funny if the guy coming out of the door was all in pink. Guys think stuff like that is funny.

I wouldn't over think too much of it, and that wasn't where my mind went at all.

I think that's reading too much into it. And if its saying that it's okay to egg a straight person's house but not a gay person's house, that's just further making them two segregated groups. I doubt they egg his house based on his preferences - sims is an equal opportunity prankster.

edit: Also, who says he's gay or even feminine for wearing that? Gender roles...break free.

oh, I just found his shirt selection to be funny, I don't think they were purposely trying to do that

I don't even see how you came up with that.

In my opinion, you are reading way too much into something that isn't even in the same ballpark.

edit: by the way, the pjs are purple... not pink.

"Anyone else think this a little bit homophobic"

Homophobic is homophobia - fear of homosexuals. So that picture isn't homophobic.

If you're asking if he looks "gay", that's different. It is quite interesting to see a man run out of the house in hearts and a purple sweater  but I don't think it's meant as anything.

You've seen the outfits EA dresses premades in; things like this are to be expected haha
Happiness is always just a plumbob away.

Don't read so far into things. Not everything has a deeper meaning and if you just let things be what they are life is a lot easier

But I doubt that they were trying to put in a homophobic message. Like another simmer said, it's his pajamas. Who cares what they look like? To me it seems like problems start when people do read too far into things.

Of course I do see why you got that idea, a middle aged looking man in purple pajamas with hearts isn't very manly lol But it's just a commercial for a video game to showcase some of the new features.

Well, in my opinion, it's offensive that you brought it up and have called attention to it, thereby creating, or attempting to create, an issue.

I did enjoy it, I just wanted to create some thoughts, share opinions and analyses over this sim is all. Please don't attack me over my thoughts because I certainly won't attack anyone over theirs. Please comment on the topic. :D

Don't worry, a lot of straight guys wear pink/hearts as well. Seriously, clothes do not make a sexuality. This isn't homophobic, and I don't see how this guy has to be gay. ;) What if the teens were gay themselfs?

I dunno. I'm a woman and would wear "manly" clothes. My husband wears colors traditionally "reserved" for women, and my soon-to-be-born baby boy has some blankets with pink lions on them - because its a color. Colors and hearts or footballs or whatever do not make a gender.

Thank you for your feedback and as for that last question, wow I would have never thought of that! :D This is why I started the thread.

I'm sorry if bringing up such a topic is offensive to some but that is not what I intended. I only hope to create a stimulating conversation about why some images are used used in advertising and how we interpret them.

Exactly. What does annoys me is stereotyping. I hate it when people think homosexuals all love pink and aren't manly at all. Sexuality is a part of you, it doesn't affect the way you act. Preference of colour, music, games, clothes, taste etc has nothing to do with it.

I'd also like to ask why you phrased your questions in the manner you did? If you are just interested in everyone's take on the video, why use the phrase 'wrong' or 'homophobic'? Why not just ask, "what does everyone think of this?" and let everyone come to their own conclusions instead of leading them?

Lol what the heck???? How did you come up with homophobia... with that? I will never know. You're over analyzing.

It's just that homophobia is being thrown around all the time. One thing has to happen to a homosexual and homophobia is already thrown in. So imagine that this guy is indeed homosexual. And the teens are not, but have no idea that the guy is gay, would that make them homophobics? No. Would people accuse them of it? Yes. And that is quite silly. They probably didn't intend this guy to be gay, and the fact that you thought he was, (which you concluded out of the stereotypes.) might hurt some people. They didn't intend that to happen when they made the trailer, they just wanted to show pranks off. :)

I'll admit on first impression of noticing his sweater I may have jumped to the worst conclusion. (I have a few gay friends and like all of my friends I'm protective of who I care about.) First impression EA's choice of victim came off wrong to me and even a little homophobic. For a few seconds I wanted to get on a soap box and scream "OMG hate crime!" But I thought wait a sec, calm down and try to think of it from different angles and don't leap to the first conclusion. Perhaps I didn't word the first post in the best of ways but my core intension was indeed meant to ask, "what does everyone think of this?"

Yes, I maybe over thinking this but over thinking something-analyzing it can lead to broader understanding.
Thank you so much everyone for your feedback so far.
