While I wait for my sims to make a decent amount of money (I plan on building them a house but they need to get the money the old fashioned way first....by working) anyways. I'd like to hear your best building advice that you have.
If you're stuck on what to build, try looking up houses and floor plans in the style you're aiming for. I'm not great at winging it when it comes to building, so I like to look at images of RL builds and take inspiration from what I see so that I can try to make something out of different images.
Best advice is download from the gallery. Let someone else do all the work.
Just make a few changes to the house and bask in the glory of something you have clinically completed to perfection.
Nine times out ten you will have to place windows at the correct height because most builders (including Maxis) just don't have a clue about the height of a Sim and the height of a window.
Agree with the comments about downloading from the gallery. I'm really particular about having stairs in the back of the house so they don't block my view of anything, so I typically find more success downloading rooms from the gallery and arranging them into a house.
I am horrible at winging a build, however, when I see pictures of a house, I find it relatively easy to transform a photo into a sim building. And then I can usually wing the inside floor plan.

/shrug all houses are different. Where I live now the bottom of the windows are below my knees. Most places I've lived the bottom is above my waist. My grandmother's house had windows that were about a foot tall, just under the ceiling. I never understood why. So when I build, I put the windows where they look the nicest.
Visit me in the gallery! CC-free builds under origin name Piperbird!
Everything I tried to build from scratch was rubbish, plus I really get frustrated, however, I love to tweak houses from the gallery, add a bathroom, change landscaping and clutter, repurpose rooms, anything like that that is not too involved is fun. It's the same with creating sims.
I found a great house one time, just the right size, BR/BA etc., but the stairs were missing, I never did get the stairs to work and eventually had to get rid of it.
My point, if I indeed have one, is that there are so many people who are really good at creating sims as well as building, so don't feel you have to do it yourself, unless you actually enjoy the process, I don't.
I've not long posted a thread about getting builders block. I'm not great or anything, but just lately everything I build is 'meh'. The advice I was given was to find a lot on the gallery and renovate it, watch lots of youtube videos (The SimSupply does some good building videos that show a fair few tips and tricks).
I generally find a house I like the look of on google images and use it as inspiration. After loads of builds I end up deleting out of frustration, I've ended up with this
By no means the best I've built but at least this time I don't hugely dislike it.
As for decorating, clutter, clutter makes everything better I also find it helps to decide what sort of house you want (beach/Tudor/Victorian etc) and take a look at pictures/gallery lots to get some inspiration. If all else fails I think the SimSupply suggested making a box and adding bits/taking bits away (making recesses) until you get something you like. You might want to take a look at the building forum too. There are lots of showcase threads and a thread for tips and tricks etc. Good luck
I research house styles I like and find a few floor plans I think I can replicate. They generally have pictures of what the house & grounds look like. I usually have issues doing the landscaping though, but I muddle through.
I don't mind Renovating houses I find in the gallery, but I want to get better at building them from scratch, like on the whim. I have a good idea of what I want, and I'll just pratice once my sims have enough Simoleans. Thanks for all the advice though guys, I'd love to keep it going!
I recommend getting the outside shell planned out first, then work your way inwards. Plan the location of kitchen, LR, DR, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc depending on which room you start with. I usually start with a skeleton, with walls first, and plan my house around the kitchen, dining, and living area. That's where they spend most of their time anyway, so those are my main focal points. I knock out walls I no longer need, and the rest comes easier. The other option, if I don't want to build, is DL from the gallery. :)
One of the best pieces of advice given to me was to not try to make large rooms. If you think it's too small, make it smaller because larger rooms can become a pain when decorating with all of that open space. Also over landscaping is very much a thing. Less is more.
I recommend building with emotional states in mind, and planning rooms to promote ideal moods. For example, a room that you will be inspired in, a room you will be focused in, etc. And then putting the type of objects in those rooms to build the skills that benefit from those moods. You might also want to build areas you can particularly show off your collections, if completing collections is your goal. Display cases look better in certain places than others. Same if you put collections in places you plan to build skills and enhance a certain mood. If you don't build with those collections in mind, they might look like they don't really belong.
I use no mods or CC and I repair my game after every time I play.

If you don't love building then the gallery is for you. No point in doing a part of gameplay you don't enjoy, like others have said let them do the work for you! If you are interested then there are tons of tutorials on youtube - it's good to see something visually. Looking up houses is a great starting point though, wait until you start drawing or taking photos of irl homes that inspire you to build later...:D
