To the person above I think that depends on the game, I had an awful lot of trouble running TS3 until I upgraded my computer but I could easily run TS2 and most of the EPs on my laptop. TS4 seems to be in between. I never tried it on my laptop but it never gave me issues on my old PC either.
True, 3 was a very slow & buggy game on any PC I tried, but much worse when I played it on a laptop then when I moved it to a desktop.
Don't use any cheats yet. This makes it easier for you to play without them later on.
Start with a single young adult Sim. Build your house in a way that leaves you with ~500-1000 simoleons. And don't worry if the house looks bad, everyone's first house looks horrible
Use the pause button (P) whenever you want to make your Sim do something. Just in the beginning.
You should probably leave autonomy on, it's making things more complicated but will show you what this game is all about.
Make group servings of food, not just single servings.
For the kitchen, you need one completely empty counter piece where your Sim cooks everything. You also need an oven, a fridge and a sink. Instead of a sink you can also take a dishwasher. And don't forget a bin! I have more than 700 hours in Sims 4 alone and I still forget it every single time. Try to not do that
Your Sim should immediately get a job so they can get money as soon as possible.
While they're at work/school you can click on the little suitcase button on their portrait. This allows you to select specific things for what they do at work.
