I find that changing the spelling of more common names will also do the trick and make them seem more interesting.
for example, you could change megan to maeghan or something like that
I'm playing a family right now with two girls and a boy. Their names are Angelique, Ashley and Ailiya. I know Ashley is normally used for girls these days but I met a publisher once who went by Ash but his full name was Ashley Darlington Grayson. I thought it was so romantic that I've always remembered his name.

I could give you a list like everyone else but I'm gonna give you a website instead. http://nameberry.com/ has saved me countless of time when I've been stuck in CAS.
I never name my Sims normal names! I tend to name them after something - or just name them really awesome names that I fall in love with. Whatever you do, don't name your Sim something you don't really like or think as just an 'eh' name! The world is in your hands... if you can't think of anything, name it something funny or a name you've always liked!
Here are some I've just collected:
BOYS:
-Jet
-Wilder
-Pilot
-Axel
-Striker
-Rogue
-Cassian
-Cashmere
-Gilbert
-Combat
-Brighton
I have a little black book that I keep, just for Sim names. I sort the names by gender and letter (A female, A male, A unisex, and so on); my inspiration comes from books, magazines, video games, friends' names... literally anywhere. And, every time I hear a name I like, I write it down and save it for when I need it.
or go to the main http://www.behindthename.com/, from here you can get culture specific, mythological, anagrams, themed, twin specific.
My fave site for when I'm to bored of the usual names.
Yay, cool links I've saved those for some future use.
I'm giving at my sims names inspired with famous personalities (I have had Giuseppe Balsamo (known as Cagliostro), Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, usw.),
then I'm sometimes using give them names as Experimental Bunny, Joe Farmer ... depending what they will in my game needed for (usefull for skilled sims).
I was amused, when I've readed name of one EA's toddler: Nervous Subject.;)
