Unimpressed with the drone

So one of my sims got a pop up saying upload some video footage. I figured out I needed a drone, so bought one and then put the drone on the ground and selected it and noticed it had a start recording of...
So I selected the sims's roommate - nothing. Drone fell out of the queue, the drone just sat there. Tried another random sim - nope, no go. Tried yet another on some random sim my sim didn't even know and off it went.
Next I had to hunt all over the map for the drone, found it eventually and selected end recording - got a pop up to name the footage. Did that and then the drone just dissolved and disappeared
First why present me sims in a list if it doesn't work on them and secondly, what the ...? Drone has just gone.
Maybe I am missing something obvious or maybe its just naff.
