Game Freezes yet animations continue (MacBook Pro)

I have the packs:
Pets, University, Island Paradise, Ambitions, Seasons, and Late Night.
My Sim recently had adopted a daughter and her boyfriend (who is a Vampire) and his cat recently moved in. Every thing was fine for the first sim day and then the next sim day (daughter and boyfriend are at school at work) the game freezes, however the snow keeps falling, plumblob keeps moving, and the fire still moves in the fire place. I can move my cursor but I can't click on anything.
I posted this in EA's Answer HQ forum and someone had me remove the pets pack and make a new save to see if it was the pack folder. It was. They then told me that there is no way to fix it and that I needed to remove strays and wild animals from my game. They also said that I should remove the pets in my other saves, too.
Is there a way I can fix this without removing pets from my game? One of my sims storylines requires pets.
