Posting in General because I need to get general opinion on using External Drive

My game, unfortunately, is loaded with CC. I love it and don't want to part with it. I've heard people say that they have put their Sims game and CC on an external drive with no problem. Has anyone else done this? When I download items, I download to the external drive if I plan to save anything for later. Is it wise to add the game and its Mods to an external drive? Ideas on this, whether it be pro or con, I really want to know what you think on this. Thank you for all input.
