Winterfest Presents "nothing" a lot

In my game, my sims often get "nothing" as their Winterfest presents. This really irks me because it doesn't fit with my gameplay style (I usually sell gifts if I don't like them, regardless of my sims' thoughts, and may buy something I like with the money, or keep them if I do like them.

Is this just random or is it something I am doing? I get the feature is meant to be funny, but I personally don't care for it much.

Keep an eye on other sims in the household. They may be placing prank gifts.

Thanks, I may just turn free will off during the holiday.

But I even get the nothing gift from father winter sometimes. It happens to at least one sim a year.

EDIT: If I give them, they also get rejected, even if the person is a romantic interest and the gift is related to their interest.
