"Eat off the floor" - puke or food?

Greetings! Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer to this specific question.
I recently started playing Pets, and have a tiny kitten who likes to be well-groomed. I know that she can get hairballs, and I also know that sometimes makes cats puke. What I don't know is this: If there is a small pile of something on the floor, and the cat goes to eat it, how can I tell if it's actual food versus puke? I read somewhere that Sims can throw food on the floor for the pets?
