I just bought Get To Work

I just bought GTW with Outdoor Retreat and Luxury Party since they were on sale. I thought it was gonna make my game more interesting for when I get Seasons. The packs are currently loading so while I'm waiting, I wanted to ask you what you think I should do first with the new save I will start? Maybe start with roommates that work in different careers?

It's hard to balance GTW when your roommates or sim's spouse also work in an active career because you have to time share for who you follow to work.

It may not affect you but I find that aspect annoying so I just wanted to warn you.
My EA ID is TranquilloSims - where I upload starter homes, family homes and some more ambitious creations.

It is easiest to pick a single career at once. So maybe family where one of the parents is a cop, doctor or scientist. Just pick what you find most exciting. Also go on vacation I recomend trying out the campground.

First thing I did was open up a retail store and very quickly because I just rushed in, I wasn’t doing so well. Had to step back from and figured I wanted to try out the active careers and they were fun.

@kemisz Oh I hadn't thought about that, but now that you say it, it makes sense! Thank you, I will follow your advice
@Malisity I'm not sure how vacations work with the working schedule? Do you have to take the day off or is it automatic?

For vacation days click on your phone and under the career slot it’ll say take vacation day and the name of career you chose

It is automatic. Your sim automatically get vacation days which are used while on vacation so you get payed. You take vacation in the phone and pick who go and where.

@CrystalAbyss1 thank you for your advice! I did pretty much the same with restaurants and it was a catastrophe so I guess it's a better idea to start with the active careers!

    My suggestion
I'd pick a household and go on vacation first. You can make money by collecting, selling fishing and brewing and start them skilling in some basics. Remember you can camp or even "live" in the national forest because you can build on the fly there. (edited you still have to rent a lot .. you just don't have to stay there) Get in a good week of vacation or more.. then when you want them to go home start them in a career.
Unfortunately work and vacation don't go well together ... but when we get Seasons you could maybe combine holidays with vacation days.
I currently have another scientist started because I'm in a new save and want the weather machine that's coming in Seasons to fit his character.
I have had two sims working in the same active career you chose which one to go with but you can see the other at the job.. I liked it. I would swap them out.

@Hermitgirl I really like the fact that you can see your other Sim working! I didn't think it would be possible. With Dine Out for example, if someone owns a restaurant, you won't see them there, only NPC's that they haven't even hired!

I bought DO and have never owned a restaurant. I use restaurants to socialise but it's a bit of a pain now that they regularly get food poisoning.

My favorite from GTW is the scientist stuff, aliens, photography(if you have pets using the best camera to simstagram them gives great photos for walls), and baking. Having a retail business can be pretty fun too. I liked collecting all the bugs and then cloning them to sell at retail along with the serums.

I think if you really wanted to do all three careers at once, you could take turns in a three-Sim household going to each career. But it would go more slowly. In the Scientist career, at least, a lot of the fun stuff is later in the career.

Oh I hate when they go to a fancy restaurant, wait for hours, pay a lot of money for their food and then come back home sick… But at least it makes storylines interesting!
Also, I like to complain about restaurants but it's actuammy one of my favorite features in TS4 ^^

After my Sim comes back from vacation, I'll make her take pictures of her family to hang on the walls. I think it's really cool and will make Simhouses feel a little bit more like home!

I thought I would try one career for each generation. First I'll do the doctor career, then police officer thing and for the third generation some sort of mad scientist. Then, the fourth generation will probably work as a botanist!

I think the GTW careers are quite buggy, unless they've been fixed? It's been a while since I've done one. Well, not quite. I did have a housemate work as a scientist recently but I never followed her to work. I just completed the breakthrough goals at home. I wanted the simray and cloning machine. Promotions came a little slower by not following her, but that was fine.

And only in the past few weeks did I attempt at doing a retail store again. I don't think I ran one since I first bought the pack, which was maybe 2 years ago? I don't think I had a good experience with them the first time I tried, but I'm having fun with them this time around. I started as a small bakery and then moved up. I moved my family to a new house, kept the furniture and upgraded my store to a furniture store. It was a nice way to flip a profit with all the excess junk I had in my inventory.

And yes, that's the thing I like about retail stores. You don't need to hire employees to run it, you can run it yourself without hiring staff and it's extra handy if you have a few household members who can pitch in. I find hiring retail staff to be a pain. Seems they still like to slack even if they are on the highest pay and have high skills. Or they switch to another task you didn't assign them to. So I prefer to run retail stores with my own households.

I have run vet clinics and restaurants before, but it is a bummer that you can't actually work at your own restaurant.

@Finvola I heard that there were glitches with the active careers but I really hope they fixed it since I am about to start working at the hospital…
I agree with you about hiring employees. I was so disappointed to see that my Sims couldn't cook for their own restaurants.

Well if you’re anticipating seasons, I would build a few business lots for some “Christmas shopping” role play scenarios, like a toy store, a boutique for festive outfits, etc.

Is there any thought to possibly adding other GTW careers besides the existing three, Police, Doctor and Scientist?

@JoSpinNJGirl I don't think so… I read somewhere that the careers were too glitchy and they prefer creating careers like the City Living ones. Even for Seasons, they said it was going to be a career where you can choose to go to work or work from home
