Cycling of pets on the computer

Anyone know how long it takes for the pets displayed for adoption on the computer to change?
I'd like to adopt a certain specie but it's been two sim days and it's still showing the same ones.
I'd prefer to adopt that way and not through household management, but it looks like it could take a while.
