I am so conffused!!! They go from toddler to adult in 3 days, and I am not playing the game

I played Sims 2 for along time but I am struggling with 4. I play a family and two days later I come back and they are all old. If I turn aging off then they never grow while I play. How can we make relationships if they go from 10 - 50 years old in 3 days, so confused. Help, what am I not understanding please.

Something is wrong in your settings, hit the ... in one of the cornors (idek which one) then hit options, then gameplay, then go to the aging area and go under the part that adjusts how long. It will say short, normal, and long. Yours must be on short, so hit normal or long.
