Dishwasher update.

I was pretty excited to get the dishwashers in the new update, honestly. And I put one in my house and everything, but I'm yet to figure out the point of them. I used my dishwasher once, and that was only because there was a pile of dirty dishes on the counter that my Sims never washed because god knows why.
And whenever I try to have my Sims clean up the dirty dishes around the house, they always just take them to the sink and clean them there, nothing to do with the dishwasher.
If you click on the dishwasher there is an option to "load" it, but for me, it's grayed out even though there are dishes all over the house because I just held a party.
Therefore, what's the point of having a dishwasher?
So am I doing something wrong or am I just dumb or what?
