I've got the Sims 4 headphones that are specifically designed for the game. I haven't used them very much but recently they don't seem to work. I plug them in and sound still comes out of the speakers instead. It's annoying because they weren't exactly cheap. I tried plugging them in and out, didn't work. In-game settings, same thing. Any suggestions? I'm not buying new ones because there must be something I'm not doing.

Edit: Ah, it looks like they are a USB headphone, so I guess you can only try them in a different USB socket.

Here is a full review on the headphones
The headset does require software installation for full functionality. As per the instructions on the back of the box the SteelSeries Engine software was downloaded (here) and installed. Version 3.2.9 was used throughout testing.

Don't know what to tell you why it won't work.. If you can find anything else like another computer maybe to try it out. It could be a faulty USB port on your computer.

I have a gaming mouse and it requires download installation to work as a gaming mouse though it does not work with the sims games so I use it as a regular mouse.
I do not have the Sims 4 headset but I do have the mouse. I only used the program for the plumbob color all though it had macro settings as well. On my new computer I chose to skip the program this time out of pure laziness and my mouse still works fine.. I just have the default green colored plumbob until I download the program.
I'm not trying to pick on you, just pointing this out.

In the sound menu scroll down under playback and make sure that the headset as a green tick by it. If no, right click and select enable. I have mine also set to default but I believe that is more of a personal choose as my speakers make me go off balance but if it is ticked and isn't set to default, set it to default and see if that helps.
Good luck
OP wants to know about the download for the headphones because op did not know there was one. I only mentioned that gaming mouses in general require downloads to work. I dont own a sims mouse or headphones.
P.S. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
You can't just plug them in and they take over the computer's sound - your speakers are still default until you tell the computer that the headphones should be, so the sound won't come from the headphones until then.
I keep mine plugged in constantly (hanging on my wall, glowing red, being awesome, all that jazz) and switch with the sound settings (by right clicking the volume icon and selecting "Playback Devices" - I'm on Windows 8.1).
Once you have plugged in your headset (assuming it is what you have) via USB (assuming it is USB), right-click on the volume button in the bottom right corner and click playback devices.
Your headset should appear in the menu. Click on the headset and click set default.
It should work with any headset, headphones, etc. since it is the same process.
I recommend to install the SteelSeries engine as well.
