This is the error log I get after crashes while saving. Does this give anyone ideas on cause of crashes while using the "normal" save option (rather than "manage worlds" save)?

If you want my opinion, I suspect you gfx card is the problematic part in your case:
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
If you're not into games but you'll play just Sims 4 for a while, grab some some supercheap but still new card like this one:
http://videocardz.com/33887/zotac-releases-geforce-gt-640-and-gt-630-zone-edition-graphics-cards
It worked for a while then the game crashed on save again.
You, I hope, restarted the game, played it more... What happened? Is it, after the game was restarted, again saving normally a few times then crashes or is now crashing on every save?
I've suggested in another case and have to suggest also in this case.
On Origin you can download and install Mass Effect 3 demo for free.
Please do it. Run the game, put all graphics options on max, then play it for a while. Does it run great or has performance problems and crashes?
