Playing The Sims From External Hard Drive?

I do all of my Sim playing on a laptop, and lately my game has been crashing. Now, I heard that Sims don't play smoothly on laptops and that got me wondering. My computer is a 64-bit Windows 8 Inspiron 15 with 320GB, 5400 RPM Hard Drive, and I think a 4GB RAM. Since it is running slowly, could I purchase an external hard drive and play the games from there? Would it make the games run smoothly?
