The Sims 2 and this New Laptop...

Hi, thanks for reading! :)

So I have the Sims 3 working on my laptop now (Yay! :)), but I also wanted to install my Sims 2 games on it if I can. I have the Sims 2 Double Deluxe, University Life Collection, Fun with Pets Collection, Best of Business Collection and Digital Copies (from Origin) of Seasons, Bon Voyage, Freetime and Apartment Life.

I want to know if I can install it and if it'll work well, or if it will damage my new laptop. I bought it for The Sims 4 originally and as the Sims 2 is old and I have Windows 8.1 as well as a really recent graphic card I don't know what problems I may encounter and I'm not very technical with these things...

If someone could tell me if I should bother installing it or just give up that would be great. And if it can be installed could I please have some instructions? I have googled forums from Mod the Sims but I couldn't find much about people successfully installing the Sims 2 with the same graphics card as me, for example, and I don't want to break my laptop.

Thank you in advance :D

I actually tried installing Sims 2 on my Win8.1 desktop but Sims 2 is not compatable with Windows 8 OS.

    Try this:
    http://modthesims.info/t/500523

It didn't work for me but it's worked for others

Thanks for replying :D I actually have done my best to follow this advice, but I stopped after installing the University Life Collection because I am worried that it might break my graphics card if I play too long... so I have it installed now but am a bit scared to actually load it up just in case. :?

Does this http://modthesims.info/t/481768 apply to me? Do I have to change which graphics card I'm using for the Sims 2 so that I don't break the laptop's graphics card? If yes, how do I do that - I've followed the instructions but the Sims 2 doesn't show up in the programs...

Now i do remember what i do with my sims 1 and it MIGHT help you out.

with my Nvidia, the sims 1 glitchs but it will play.alot of black screens and crashs after awhile.because my graphics card runs a MUCH higher res then the old game can handle.so i would completely uninstall Nvidia and let my onboard graphics play it (which works like a dream then i reinstall from the nivida folder)

the thing with the sims 2,might be the same based on res of the card compared to the game.if the card res settings were fixed before hand then ingame said res was set to apply with those new settings,it may run just fine.unlike the sims 3 which has a long list of res's that you can set,the sims 2 is no where near this.it has the standard res's but maybe 1 or 2 higher.the sims 1 ONLY had 2 res's and they were LOW end.

    Edited for res list-

Ill list the res's by game that is required during game play.

    sims 1- 800x600 and 1024x768 only
sims 2- 800x600 to 1440x900 (was incorrect here about all its options and i now remember that if the game wasnt full res for me,it would cause a black screen and monitor would pass out lol)
sims 3- i imagine the sims 3 is the same.

i think that the card requires what the needed res is.sims 1 needs a card with that res and if not,it will have issues.once you get past the WIN8 issue, then the sims 2 should run fine if everything is set to allow the cards full power and said matchs up with the game.i dont have proof on this but just experience and opinion.

Okay, thanks for telling me about your experience with the Sims 1. :) I've just finished installing my Digital copy of Seasons - and I've just found out that, luckily, that one automatically set the game to use my Nvidia card! So hopefully I won't have to meddle with the settings too much more, but I haven't played yet, now I'm installing the remaining Digital downloads and patching them, so we'll just have to see what happens! :P :-)

Okay I'm back but I didn't get to any actual gameplay.

The dimensions on the screen look weird to me. I have the Alienware 17" so my screen is probably bigger than what they originally made the Sims 2 to work on... I also got a black screen, but I pressed the windows button and then went back to the game and it was fine.

There was also an error message that popped up that said something like "Failed to find any Direct X 9, please make sure you have it and this program will now terminate".

I also changed some graphics settings in Nvidia Control panel (to try to make the game work with my Nvidia card) and that made the game only operate in I think 800 x 600 resolution with no other options (so I'm going to try changing it back). Is there anything I can do to make the game fit normally on my screen? :?

Yeah. Guess we can't play 2 unless they patch it. :(

When I try to play TS2 the screen has a kind of flicker graphical issue. :?

Well at least we have TS3 and 4 to look forward to...

I can't play 2 with the way the graphics are atm. Does anyone know how to fix the flickering when you move the camera?

I installed TS2 with all expansions and stuff packs on my windows 8 laptop. Oh when you play change the shadows to medium it gets rid of the black boxes.
    Follow EA's instructions here:
If the previous steps did not work, you can try copying the disk files to your harddrive and installing without the CDs. Make sure to follow the steps below exactly as they read, or else the install may not work.

Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
    Select My Computer.
Right-click Local Disk C: and select Open.
Right-click on a blank space inside the new window (not above an icon) and select New, then Folder.
Name the folder Disk Images. (It is important that the name has a space in it.)
Double-click the new Disk Images folder.
Right-click on a blank space inside the new window (not above an icon) and select New, and then Folder.
    Name the folder Disk1.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 while substituting Disk1 for Disk2. It is important to note there must not be a space between "Disk" and the number.
Insert Disk 1 of The Sims 2 University into your CD-ROM drive and if the autoplay starts, cancel it.
Double-click My Computer to open it.
Right-click your CD-ROM drive and select Open.
When you see the contents of the disk in the window, click Edit at the top of the window and choose Select All. (All the contents of the disk should now be highlighted.)
Click Edit at the top of the window and select Copy.
Double-click the Disk1 folder you created under C:\Disk Images.
Click Edit at the top of the window and select Paste. (This will copy the contents of the CD into the Disk1 folder.)
Repeat steps 9 through 14 for Disk 2 until you have copied each disk into its appropriate folder.
Once the disks have been copied, remove ALL CDs from any drives.
Double-click the Disk1 folder under Disk Images and double-click the autorun.exe file to start the installation.
To save disk space, you can delete the Disk Images folders after the installation has completed.
    But don't run autorun.

    They should install no problem.

Make sure you run the game in XP service pack 2! That often helps. And disable Intel graphics they don't work well with TS2

Go to device manager and under graphic devices right click on Intel Graphics and click on the disable option :)
