Story Progression

The Sims 3 story progression is terrible. My town doesn't feel lively at all. Nobody improves their skills, nobody advances in their career, everyone drives Sloppy Jalopy and the town itself looks pretty empty... They call this "story progression" - "story regression" would be a more suitable name! :x

Is there anything I can do to make things better? I was thinking about downloading the Nraas Story Progression mod, but I'm really reluctant towards mods in general, because I'm afraid that they will damage my game. But if it works, I'll download it, because this is just crazy.

The only way to improve the progression of your town is through mods. And Nraas Story Progression is a simple mod. If you follow the instructions, it's unlikely it will damage your game.

I never used mods until fairly recently. Not in Sims1 or Sims2. So I was completely new to mods and everyone kept talking about mods. I finally decided to try a couple (MasterController and Story Progression) and they are pretty easy to learn (though I'm still learning, too) and use. Story Progression will work all by itself once installed, unless you decide to tweak some settings. I now have several Nraas mods. And couldn't imagine running my game without them.

Edit to add: Tweaking the settings of Story Progression will not stop it from working, just change the way it works. I should clarify that. For example, default settings with Nraas Story Progression mod for marriage last names is hyphenated. I don't like hyphenated last names, so I change it to husbands last name. Things like that. The mods still works, you just adjust it to fit you and your needs.

I always had issues with EA's game-breaking SP and it always used to stuff households with too many pets or cause them to have babies when they couldn't afford to or cause broken marriages and even move my households out and replace them with it's ideas. It caused me to have to kill so many game saves that I've long since lost count of the ruined games.I don't have these issues anymore unless I get careless and forget to set story progression up to not make these things happen.I've got 56 NRaas Mod package files and that's what it takes to get my game working the way I want it working.

It took me a very long time before I decided to start playing with any mods in my game. I think the straw that broke the camel's back for me was this. I was playing the town of Twinbrook. The one thing I would keep running into was the family I would play would have children, but as the kids got older, there was not any one for them to date, hang out with, or eventually get married to. So I decided to pick five, just five families, and got every one of them pregnant. All five babies were born, and within a 24 sim hours later, EA's story progression had murdered every single one of them off. Yes I say murdered, because they were electrocuted, and drowned in a pool, even though half of the families did not have any pools.

I absolutely refuse to play this game without the NRaas Story Progression mod ever again. I will let you know that there are several tweaks you can do to it, to fit your style of game play.

In case you aren't sure of the correct things to do when adding mod, I sure didn't know myself, and that was partly why it took me so long. Here are a couple of Youtube videos that has some very easy description.

You can't go wrong with Llandros helping you install the mods. But he has since updated his videos (those are fairly old and bad-ish quality recordings). Here's links to his new mods videos...

    and the second...

And also, he has all the links you need in the description/info about the video. Seriously, he makes it super easy to understand.

I've downloaded Story Progression Mod and after the first minutes of playing, I already noticed the difference. My town really feels alive now and I see other Sims around all the time and they are all doing something. I also like the fact that they're advancing in their careers, buy new cars and develop new relationships!
But I have a question: How to hide the map tag on every Sim in the town?
    annoying-map-tags.png

BTW I use StoryProgression Mod version 263 and I've also installed Master Controller, so I don't know which mod allows map tag functions.

+Another question: How to prevent other Sims from changing their clothes and hairstyles AND from collecting butterflies/gems/rocks? :P

For map tags, I believe that's SP Extra:

    https://nraas.wikispaces.com/StoryProgression+FAQ+Miscellaneous

I usually have it set just to show friends and family. The link explains the color coding that comes with the SP Extra module. I don't recall what tags just come with the SP base module.

Just do a word search on "tags" on the interactions page:

    http://nraas.wikispaces.com/StoryProgression+Interactions

As to your last question, dunno about clothes, and I've never seen an NPC collect anything other than spring festival eggs

The original poster wrapped it all up in a nutshell. I am annoyed with how everyone drives around the sloppy jalopies. I actually just shut off story progression because I set my city the way I like it and I don't like things changing up on me. I usually just set up my family and disable aging.

The original SP hardly works for me. Sims don't get jobs. Kids don't do their homework and end up with horrible traits when they age up. AND the thing that bothers me the most is that they don't have babies! That's just my experience with the original SP.

I've had the SP you are considering installing a few times. I love it, even with just the base mod. However, with 8GB system memory, I still have lagging with that mod installed. And I see why. The mod is controlling a lot of things at once. Currently, I am playing with the original SP for a lag-free game.

Story progression is a great idea in concept. I really hope TS4 continues story progression, but with a much improved version. I really hope they don't scratch the idea in future installments.

I have to say that Nraas Story Progression mod is really good! Other Sims now raise their skills, earn promotions at work, get married some of them even buy new cars or get lose some weight. And the best about this mod is, that everything is customizable! I can set the gaming style that suits me. :D
But I have a slight problem (it has appeared since I installed this mod) - some of the portrait pictures are invisible. In the first picture I've posted you can see faces on the map tags, but after some time (15 minutes or so) some of them disappear. Erin Kennedy, for an example, always loses her picture (I've started a new game three times). And after an hour when I checked Relationships panel, there are lots of people who are missing their faces. I'll post some pictures later.
Does anyone know, what's wrong and how can I resolve this issue? :?

I would not worry about the missing faces, I see it from time to time, and usually they will show back up later. I'm not exactly sure what cause it, maybe their work outfits, who knows. But I have noticed if there is a sim who's face is not in that little circle on the map, and my sim knows them, usually their picture is gone there as well. I'm pretty sure this is an EA issue as well, because I have seen the sims photos missing from the relationship panel even before I added any mods. Another thing could be possible that they are going to an age change, but that is just speculation on my part.
