Not Truely Custom

ToutIllumineToutIllumine Posts: 39 New Member
Has anyone really been dowloading hair/clothing?
It's all just recolors you could do yourself in game, and downloading them seems like it would only clutter up your files when in CAS. Unless I'm missing something, there aren't really any new "hairstyles" to be found because there isn't a body shop for the game. I'm a little dissapointed.

Thoughts? I want to make sure I'm not missing getting new hairstyles entirely since the selection is a bit slim, especially for adults.

It'll be awhile for 3rd party design and code folks to come up with the tools needed for truly custom content. TSR and others are working on tools to allow us to create things for in game use.

It is possible to make custom patterns already though...

You can see one of mine here:

...and, thanks to HystericalParoxysm, from MTS, the tutorial and list of tools needed is here:

    @Celithralia

Nice pattern! The only work I saw on the exchange (other than lots, sims)!

    Keep up the good work.

I would also keep checking back with Modthesims as well...alot of people over there specialize in modding and creating and they are already working on stuff, so I imagine it is just a matter of time before we start seeing some really cool things. :D

I use illustrator, and photoshop, however gimp works fine for rasters, and I heard the Inkscape is a decent, free vector program. You can check it out here: http://www.inkscape.org/

You will need to get a DDS plugin for gimp. You can get it here: http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/

Well instead of doing it yourself, its already done for you. People have been downloading stuff that I've uploaded, and people have asked and requested for recolours of certain items, and they didnt want to do it themselves.

I used to subscribe to the what's the point theory, but now I see the point. The point is, some don't want to spend the time recoloring objects and for many items it can take quite a bit of time to color co-ordinate items so that they look good. It's one thing to recolor a solid, it's quite another to recolor a striped or flowered item such as a shirt and have it match the pants, belt, and shoes and have them look like they really belong together. So some would rather just play the game then to have to fool with it.

Same with houses and furniture. I was color coordinating an entire house last night and started a new one tonight. Very time consuming stuff when you have to do it item by item, and especially if it's an off color. So yeah, there is a purpose. And heck, even if it wasn't, you have one gigabyte to store your stuff so why not do it?

Sometimes, when looking at what others have created, I find myself thinking, "WHOA, how did they come up with that awesome design and colour combo? Never crossed my mind..."

There are some fairly obvious designs (the usual black and white), but then again, there are also some very oddball stuff on the community as well. Maybe that's one of the plus points of sharing creations. ^^

Man I never went on the forums or fan sites or anything for Sims 1 and Sims 2...

I honestly can't believe how popular it is to make your own designs and stuff. That's a lot of work for a game...

For those looking for a cheaper alternative graphics package, I recommend Paint Shop Pro. It's cheap compared to Photoshop (in the UK). I've used it for a number of years now, with no complaints.
    Hope this helps.
