Computer keeps crashing whenever I play

Ever since I installed University, I can play for a bit and then it crashes
There's no pattern to it, I'll be happily playing and then all of a sudden it will freeze. My sim might be walking somewhere, might be eating, it doesn't matter. They stop, and the only thing I can move is the mouse.
Then, when I move the mouse around it switches between my normal cursor and the sims one.
Then I have no choice but to ctrl alt delete and then get the sims 3 has stopped working message.
What do I do? Has anyone else been having this problem
