“Come dance Ariella!” Libby shouted over the music.
I just smiled, waved and turned my attentions back to my third drink.
“You better slow down there sweetheart, or you don’t know where you’ll find yourself waking up.” A strangers voice commented from beside me.
I glanced at him, tall, dark and handsome certainly fitted him. I sighed so not in the mood to fend off men. “Well not beside you sweetheart.” I replied.
“Ouch.” He placed his hand on his heart, mocking injury. “Rough day?”
I just took another swig of my drink, hoping he’d take the hint and disappear.
He smiled. “Boyfriend dump you?” Looks like he’s sticking around.
“You hoping so?” I asked, eyebrow raised.
“Answering my question with a question. So I take it he did then.”
“No.” I replied, and raised my glass to my lips.
“Then you caught him in bed with another woman.”
I nearly choked.
“So I’m right.” He replied, smugly.
“No.” I lied.
“What parts not true?” He asked.
“The boyfriend part.”
“Explain.”
“My fiancé.” I replied, not even sure why I was telling this complete stranger.
“Ah.” Was his only response.
I narrowed my eyes at him, growing more irritated by his presence with every second that passed.
After a moment of silence he finally spoke.
“So now your just going to drown your sorrows?” He asked.
I nodded, “Pretty much.”
“I’m sure you’ll find someone else.” He said, with a grin as he moved closer.
“Well it won’t be you.” I snapped, though I was slightly intoxicated by the smell of his aftershave or maybe the alcohol was getting to me. Either way, I didn’t want to like him.
“Wow, try to give someone hope and they shoot you down.”
“Yeah well, I’m not in the mood.”
“Clearly, probably why your fiancé jumped into bed with another woman.” He remarked.
My jaw dropped, how dare he. He doesn’t know anything about me or my life. I fought the urge and walked away.
“Talk to you later then.” He called.
Oh there would be no later, I thought stopping my heels.
“I’m gonna head home.” I shouted to Libby and Erin over the music.
“Stay, dance, don’t go.” Erin pleaded.
Instinctively I started to say no, but then I noticed the stranger still watching me. I couldn’t let him know he’d gotten to me. So I nodded and started to dance.
“Hey, tall, dark and handsome is checking you out from over by the bar.” Libby commented.
“More like, annoying, stupid and arrogant.” I replied.
Libby just raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything.
The hours just flew by with Libby and Erin.
In the early hours of the morning we finally set off home.
A little tipsy I struggled to get my key into the door of my apartment when it flung open by itself, and I nearly ended up flat on my face. Stood in front of me was a stranger, a fake tanned, blonde, half naked stranger.
“S…S…Sorry.” She stuttered, blushing.
She dodged past me and slid straight through the closing elevator doors and out of my life as quickly as she entered it.
I stepped into the apartment to find my roommate, Jared, snacking in the kitchen.
“What did you think to my latest conquest?” He asked.
I just shook my head.
“Oh your no fun, I should have gotten a guy roommate instead.” Jared was my best friend; he let me move in this morning after I caught Sam, my fiancée, in bed with another woman.
“You want me to congratulate you and give you a pat on the back?” I asked, sarcastically.
“Yeah, or a high five or a hug, whatever works for you.” He smiled.
“Men.” I sighed.
“Hey, you know you couldn’t live without us.”
“Yes, because women could never populate the world without you.” I replied.
“That’s a better attitude. An don’t forget how willingly we offer our services.”
“A little too willingly.” I remarked, raising an eyebrow.
“Hey, don’t hate the player.”
“An a player you most certainly are.”
“Why thank you.” He smiled.
I shook my head. “I’m off to bed.”
“Sweet dreams, you want me to come help you warm your sheets?” He joked.
“No thank you, I don’t know where you’ve been.” I replied, heading for the stairs.
“Your missing out.” He called.
“Doubt it.” I shouted and closed my bedroom door behind me.
Sunlight was already starting to stream in through the window.
Sleep was very much needed. First day at a new job tomorrow or rather today. I think a dose of coffee will be required. I think a lot of coffee will be needed for my new party life. I smiled to myself. Who would have thought? Me going to dance clubs and staying up all night. I’d gotten engaged to my high school sweetheart and we had planned to live the suburban dream. Well, that was until he jumped into bed with some random girl. I never thought I’d live in the city, but I was actually somewhat grateful Sam had no self-control.
