WTG!!!! :mrgreen: I saw this and dashed over there to say hey first! Thanks for all the work in getting it moved and back up and running. Now that you have free time want to write my speech? :mrgreen: Just kidding, it's nearly done I just wish someone else could give it. I tend to freeze up and forget my head when I do public speaking. I honestly don't know what is worse, standing in front of a group and doing it once, or taping it uploading a file that will be there forever to go over and over and over and pick apart to find all my mistakes :lol:

I started to do my speech on TS3, but with all the issues we've had lately it wouldn't have been very positive. So it's simply a speech about computers and entertainment. Just the fine tuning of it and transfer it to a speaking outline :roll: I've got time right? It's not due till tomorrow at 11 pm :oops:

Hi, Evergreen! How are you? I haven't had time to be around here much lately. :oops:

Um, N3mb3r, you just hot-linked an image on my website without permission (and no, I don't grant permission to people to hotlink images). That can get you into a whole lot of trouble. It's called bandwidth theft.

Ooh, Amy, I missed your post! Sorry, I don't do speeches. I went to high school back in the day before that kind of thing was required and totally avoided it. :oops:

Rflong, clearly we need to move some of your post count from this site to that one. :lol:

I still do need to adjust people's post counts after the pre-moving cleaning I did. You know, I'm not even sure why my name shows up in the Shoutbox red unless it hung onto the original settings. I changed it to black a while back when I was redoing the colors.

Ah, Shikoah, that's okay! We can't all be long-winded ramblers. Someone has to be quiet. Good grief, imagine the world if everyone was talking all the time! :)

Evergreen, I was hoping things might slow down for a while and I may have a couple of weeks but something big is in the works and if it happens it will take a lot of my time for a few weeks. It will only be temporary, though.

N3mb3r,

Un-link the Cow, and no one gets hurt. :mrgreen:

Sometimes someone needs to tell us the rules so we can follow them.

What is hotlinking and bandwidth theft?
Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is direct linking to a web site's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be using an <img.> tag to display a JPEG image you found on someone else's web page so it will appear on your own site, eBay auction listing, weblog, forum message post, etc.

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transferred from a web site to a user's computer. When you view a web page, you are using that site's bandwidth to display the files. Since web hosts charge based on the amount of data transferred, bandwidth is an issue. If a site is over its monthly bandwidth, it's billed for the extra data or taken offline.

A simple analogy for bandwidth theft: Imagine a random stranger plugging into your electrical outlets, using your electricity without your consent, and you paying for it.

How Do I know I am hotlinking?
This is how you might display an image graphic file in the HTML on your own web page:

<img. src="image.jpg" height="350" width="200".>

This tag tells the site to request the file image.jpg on the same server as the rest of the files on the site. If you were to hotlink an image from an outside server, the HTML might look like this:

<img. src="http://notmysite.com/image.jpg" height="350" width="200".>

This tag tells the site to request the image.jpg from a different server other than your own. Every time the page is loaded, the outside server has to use its bandwidth to display the image. To avoid this problem, don't link to files on servers that don't belong to you. To share images and files on your own web page, upload them to your own server's directory or to a free image hosting service that allows direct linking."

Thanks, AuntieLynds! I was going to come back and explain better then got side-tracked!

N3mb3r, that cow is a free graphic that I downloaded from the internet to use on CS3. If you want to use it you are as welcome to it as anyone but you must upload it to someplace else. Do you have an account with PhotoBucket or ImageShack or one of those places? That's how we post images on various forums.

I sometimes will upload images to my webhost and post in forums but only if I know that image isn't going to be left there long-term. If it might be left there long-term I upload it to my PhotoBucket account. My webhost has a policy against using their service for photo storage and while I have a lot of bandwidth available if I abuse the resources provided they can close my account thereby shutting down six different websites.
