How to edit pictures (specifically-how to edit arms and legs into a certain position)

I downloaded gimp last night and started fiddling with my sims on different backgrounds. Very basic stuff right now but I would eventually like to start creating pieces that include sims in positions that they do not perfom in the game. My question is how do you do this? Do you take pics of your sim and then just cut certain body parts and paste them onto your sims body? Say I want to have a sim have her hand up to her face and is tugging at her bottom lip with her index finger (if that makes any sense). If anyone knows of a tutorial of how to do this it would be great if you could paste the link for me (: Thanks
