Have I lost all of my progress?

I guess what I really need here is a brief explanation of how to save the game.
Last night I moved in a pre-made family from the bin named Glover and played them.
This morning I played some athletic girl named Kennedy.
Then when it was time to quit playing, I went to save the game. It said the city's name was Sunset Valley. I had a bad feeling I was overwriting my game from last night, but I looked to the little booklet, and it said a game save represents your entire city. I thought OK, it's adding Kennedy to the Glovers and I will have two families in Sunset Valley. That was wrong, because now they are nowhere to be found. I can't find their house, can't load them, etc.
Do I have to rename each story as I save like "Sunset Valley - Glover," Sunset Valley - Kennedy"? I almost did that, but that is going to get so cluttered up!
So if anyone could please advise me or point me to some tutorial or help pages I missed, I would be very grateful. I am not so worried about the Glovers since I don't think I got them off to the best start, but I don't want to keep losing gameplay.
