How To Have Your New Landlord Live In Unit

HI. From the moment I heard about For Rent, I knew what I wanted to do. I have a set of identical twin girls in my household. I wanted them to finish University and then the notion was for them to venture outside of their parents' safe nest. They would purchase a modest apartment complex and live there. I built the 4-unit place and got it divided into four apartments, plus a few common areas. Upon graduation, Twin A asked her very famous and very wealthy father if he might finance their venture. He transferred the funds to the girls' joint bank account They were all set.

Could I find a way to designate unit-1 as their home unit? No. Sadly, I scoured the Internet, watched a couple of videos but even then the answer evaded me. Any time I tried to find the little box for Home Unit to tick, it wasn't there. I even read parts of the Q & A on For Rent. Marvelous thread, by the way. Armed with what I thought was the answer, finally, I tested it. Sadly, it also failed.

So, and I'm uncertain why I did this, I decided to take the twins back to the park in Brindleton Bay, where I first plopped them down. This after I selected tenants for unit-4. This is the key to becoming the Landlord, apparently. At any rate, since the park in BB still showed this was where they were living, it occurred to me to do the Move Family action from the phone. Voila. I selected Willow Creek, the Oakenstead Estates, and then the lot showed up in the middle of the screen. I clicked on it, but nothing happened. I tried clicking on it again, and saw two signs above it. I selected unit-1 and they moved in. When I checked the UI under Build Mode, lo, and behold, it was designated as Home Unit!

I am likely one of few who had this problem, but since I've been struggling with it for more than a few days, I thought I would share what I stumbled upon.

1. Buy the property.
2. Select a tenant(s)
3. Move from your current lot
4. Select the unit you wish for your Landlord
5. Voila.

If this is old news to you, no worries. I just wanted to share, for those, like me, that are completely frustrated by it all.

I'm still so deeply confused. I, too, had a pair of sisters who I wanted to be landlords together. They were already living on/owned the property when I switched it to residential rental. I was able to designate separate units, including (IIRC) selecting their apartment as the home unit. However, I have no option for them to set the rental conditions or put the other units up for rent. I have no earthly idea how to proceed now.

Oh, I ran into this initially. I built my own small apartment complex. That one was okay. But in following the steps from the video, I built the complex, anew. But it didn't work out. So, I had to abandon the newer version of it (which in some ways I liked better) but there was no way, seemingly to change the designation. I even tried to return it to residential and then back again. Instead, since I had saved my original work, I replaced it with the older version. Then I did the steps I listed and voila. They do make this harder than it needs to be. Face/palm.

Can you do a rollback, or save recovery? You need to first select a tenant, then the owners return to their home. And from there you should be able to pull up the information under the business tab in the lower right corner. Either that or place another apartment building into a new lot and start all over again. I hope this helps.

I gave up on playing Rentals till they fix being able to turn a Residential Rental back to Residential. The lot would seem to go to residential when I switched it back, but once I saved it as residential, got out of the game and went back in it was Residential rental again. Even when I bulldozed the lot it wouldn’t let me put a Residential back in there. I hadn’t even played the lot yet to get a landlord. Have you had any problem switching the lot back to residential? I’m just afraid to play my main residential save ( I’m currently playing a practice one ).

I will favorite this thread for later when they fix the lot type change . I’m not sure if it was just the lot I downloaded or what ( I have my download set to no Cc as I play a vanilla game ). And, I saw no wrench on the download.

Quite frankIy, the problem of never being able to let out the other units never went away, even after I tried to make the switch back to residential. I never saved, however. But after the switch (while I was still playing that lot) and switching back to the Residential Rental, nothing was fixed. That's when I made the sad decision to place the original apartment complex onto the lot. I'll have to take a picture of the 'broken' one so I can rebuild it. It was a bit wider than the original and I had more lot left for some nice community amenities out in the back. Oh, well. I'm sorry I wasn't able to help.

I hardly explored any of the landlord features. Can't risk losing my 10 years old save. When this pack was announced I wanted to have a few households focusing n most of the features. With all the scary possible outcomes I'll now just use it for having a couple extra households per lot. I had landlords in my game for years, they own lots where others reside or a company runs a business. I play rotationally, so a new game feature based on playing the same household for weeks is not possible in my game. My landlords can not wait a week to get rent, because that would possibly take up to 2 real life years. Instead they get a daily rent that I administrate in a spreadsheet. Tenants pay per day, too.

It's upsetting that a main feature is not working. I love the Tomarang world, it helps calming me down a little bit ;)

@Simmerville I hear you. Another player suggest they would put For Rent aside for now. I'm strongly thinking of having my twins sell their Residential Rental, move into a smaller house that is theirs alone and pursue another career. I am so disappointed right now.

Yeah, I thought the rental feature was set up a bit strangely too. I also play rotationally, but I have aging turned off, so it wouldn’t be as pressing for me. I have been playing a practice save since for rent came out as when I saved a residential rental then decided I no longer wanted the lot to be a residential rental and turned it back to a residential it wouldn’t stay a residential even when I bulldozed the lot ( this was during build mode before I even rented the lots out yet, or put a landlord there ). Since my save is a 10 year old saved too, I’m now afraid to even turn any lots in my main save to Residential Rental in case I wanted to change the residential rental to some other type of lot later. I’m just hoping they fix that soon. It’s no use for me buying the new kits and things till they fix the lot issue. I’m afraid to even play my main save as so many have said their saves have been corrupted. I’m sorry I jumped on the For Rent bandwagon so soon and bought it early. It’s certainly not worth corrupting a long time save,

@SheriSim57 & @Simmerville I, too, am regretting this EP. I didn't try it out in a practice save, but I do have a backup (in fact more than one) of my main save which isn't any older than about a year at this point. I've had to restart this family so many times already. When I can, to avoid a full-scale restart, is to do a save recovery or just roll back. I always do a 'Save As' with each playing session, so I have options. Plus, I'm hoping it works that way it did in Sims3, giving the save a bit of a refresh, to avoid corruption. I am currently disenchanted with the whole thing. I would uninstall, but for some of the items it came with. But, then again, uninstalling might not do the trick, as we had the Patch. :open_mouth:
