HI. From the moment I heard about For Rent, I knew what I wanted to do. I have a set of identical twin girls in my household. I wanted them to finish University and then the notion was for them to venture outside of their parents' safe nest. They would purchase a modest apartment complex and live there. I built the 4-unit place and got it divided into four apartments, plus a few common areas. Upon graduation, Twin A asked her very famous and very wealthy father if he might finance their venture. He transferred the funds to the girls' joint bank account They were all set.
Could I find a way to designate unit-1 as their home unit? No. Sadly, I scoured the Internet, watched a couple of videos but even then the answer evaded me. Any time I tried to find the little box for Home Unit to tick, it wasn't there. I even read parts of the Q & A on For Rent. Marvelous thread, by the way. Armed with what I thought was the answer, finally, I tested it. Sadly, it also failed.
So, and I'm uncertain why I did this, I decided to take the twins back to the park in Brindleton Bay, where I first plopped them down. This after I selected tenants for unit-4. This is the key to becoming the Landlord, apparently. At any rate, since the park in BB still showed this was where they were living, it occurred to me to do the Move Family action from the phone. Voila. I selected Willow Creek, the Oakenstead Estates, and then the lot showed up in the middle of the screen. I clicked on it, but nothing happened. I tried clicking on it again, and saw two signs above it. I selected unit-1 and they moved in. When I checked the UI under Build Mode, lo, and behold, it was designated as Home Unit!
I am likely one of few who had this problem, but since I've been struggling with it for more than a few days, I thought I would share what I stumbled upon.
1. Buy the property.
2. Select a tenant(s)
3. Move from your current lot
4. Select the unit you wish for your Landlord
5. Voila.
If this is old news to you, no worries. I just wanted to share, for those, like me, that are completely frustrated by it all.

Oh, I ran into this initially. I built my own small apartment complex. That one was okay. But in following the steps from the video, I built the complex, anew. But it didn't work out. So, I had to abandon the newer version of it (which in some ways I liked better) but there was no way, seemingly to change the designation. I even tried to return it to residential and then back again. Instead, since I had saved my original work, I replaced it with the older version. Then I did the steps I listed and voila. They do make this harder than it needs to be. Face/palm.
Can you do a rollback, or save recovery? You need to first select a tenant, then the owners return to their home. And from there you should be able to pull up the information under the business tab in the lower right corner. Either that or place another apartment building into a new lot and start all over again. I hope this helps.

I will favorite this thread for later when they fix the lot type change . I’m not sure if it was just the lot I downloaded or what ( I have my download set to no Cc as I play a vanilla game ). And, I saw no wrench on the download.

It's upsetting that a main feature is not working. I love the Tomarang world, it helps calming me down a little bit

Yeah, I thought the rental feature was set up a bit strangely too. I also play rotationally, but I have aging turned off, so it wouldn’t be as pressing for me. I have been playing a practice save since for rent came out as when I saved a residential rental then decided I no longer wanted the lot to be a residential rental and turned it back to a residential it wouldn’t stay a residential even when I bulldozed the lot ( this was during build mode before I even rented the lots out yet, or put a landlord there ). Since my save is a 10 year old saved too, I’m now afraid to even turn any lots in my main save to Residential Rental in case I wanted to change the residential rental to some other type of lot later. I’m just hoping they fix that soon. It’s no use for me buying the new kits and things till they fix the lot issue. I’m afraid to even play my main save as so many have said their saves have been corrupted. I’m sorry I jumped on the For Rent bandwagon so soon and bought it early. It’s certainly not worth corrupting a long time save,
