DirectX 9 or 12

I've just replaced my laptop and moved most of my Sims 3 stuff over. I had problems with the game crashing after a few minutes ever since. It seems to be the "Enabling Advance Rendering" toggle. It works okay when not checked, but the game looks lousy. I've done some searching and found a lot of references to DirectX 9. I have DirectX 12 on the machine already. Do I need 9 or does 12 work without it? Do I add 9 and then have both? If I add 9 will it replace 12 and other newer programs will stop working?

According to this link I can install DirectX 9 and it won't affect DirectX 12, so I did that. It didn't help. My game is still crashing on my new laptop when I use "Enabling Advance Rendering." Does it have to do with the integrated graphics not being separate?
