Relationships keep resetting

I saved and quit the game, only to open the game again and find out that my two sims are strangers instead of being spouses. This has happened in the past and is the reason why I stopped playing. Why does this happen? I cleared all cache, I noticed the game runs smoother. But how do I fix this? Please help.
