Typically when I play, I do make a family and stick with them, but if I get bored I'll just make a new family and come back to the other one later. Or I'll do a challenge from the forums to spice things up in my game.

I typically don't use clubs, but one time I made a "Friendship Club" just so all of my Sim's friends could hangout at once without having to select them all when inviting them over or out.
