@Joleao, I was reading up on the requirements to complete high school. And this country is all over the place with it. When I completed SACE, it was structured like the HSC currently is in NSW, while SACE has now got a completely different structure.
And here we are thinking primary school is confusing enough.

@friendlyone20, I tried googling it, I keep getting australian cancer council and SunSmart related articles, nothing about the US, which is why I asked on here, where there are people from the US, who might know what their local schools and kindergartens reqire in the way of hats.
So to put it in to the topic, does your niece have to wear a hat to kindergarten? Do they have any sun smart campaigns to try to prevent skin cancer?

You don't have to reply, you can choose to ignore my posts, and let someone else answer if they want. I just have the curiosity level of a cat.

My niece came home today. I asked did she learn anything. Only things she remembered are coloring and recess. LOL but she was very excited about her first day.

    Hello
I am glad that your niece enjoyed her first day! :) That is great!

Kindergarten starts at age 5. What about that makes no sense?
Most people I know started school at 5.
Kindergarten was for 4 year olds, it's a pre-schooling type thing. For socialising your rug rat, before they have to be in class.
Kindergarten out here is where kids generally learn their colors, shapes, numbers, letters stuff like that.
That sounds like what is called reception here.
They have recess where they have 45 minutes of play 45 minutes of rest during the day.
That sounds pretty awesome. At school we only had a 20 minute recess, and a 40 minute 'quiet time' after lunch in year one/two (and reception too, I think)
But the point of kindergarten is building social skills with other children.
Same purpose as the thing with the same name has here.
After kindergarten kids go on to 1st grade. It's called 1st grade out here, not year one. Kindergarten is called kindergarten out here, not year one.
Thanks, you've pretty much cleared it up.
    Your kindegarten is our reception.
And yeah, you call 'em grades, we call 'em years (cos grades are what you get at the end of the year :p )

And here I go again... Question:
What do you have before kindergarten? Is there a pre-kndergarten thing? For younger kiddlets?

I just remembered I went to a thing called 'playgroup' when I was about 2.
And as has been clarified, our kindergarten is a slightly different thing, aimed at slightly younger kids (generally). Kindergartens here are often not attached to a school, they're often a separate entity, while reception is pre-year one, and is a part of the school.

This is a great example of a word having a very similar meaning, but with enough of a difference, that it becomes something else, within two english speaking countries.

Congrats to the family, for the sprog making it to school age, and again condolences to the child, the time of torture has begun. She may not be aware of it yet, but within a few years, she will be. Poor kidlet. I hope she finds a subject that she loves, and a teacher who makes her want to learn.

Well there's pre-k and preschool in my neck of the woods but I don't know what the difference is.

you wouldn't think you're talking to a 5 year old
wait.... 5? Isnt' that a little late for kindy?
I started kindergarten when I was 4, and year one at five (I skiped reception). What age to kids start school in the US?
Or do you call reception, kindergarten? I thought you called that pre-school?
    I am confused.

Oh no 5 is the perfect age for most. 4 is slightly too early but not impossible to start kindergarten. I started kindergarten at 5(?). It depends on what age you you enroll at.

    I think you're missing what I'm saying.
In australia, 5 is late for kindy. Because most kids start school at 5. In australia, kindy isn't school, it's supervised play, organised craft activities, singing and story telling (or, at least, it was when I went). I think there's even nap time in there somewhere.
Reception is the start of school, though not everyone does it, since it's just a gap filler between when you turn five, and the start of the next school year. It's structured like school, sitting at tables, leaning things off a... I assume it's a white board these days, they phased out blackboards while I was still in school. It can be seen as a head start, but the reality is, kids will be ready to learn when they are ready. It took me until year 3 to really get the hang of reading, and then they couldn't stop me from reading.

If you start kindergarten at five, do you have year one? Or is kindergarten year one? Or are your years not numbered? The school I went to was R-12, that is reception to year 12.

Sorry about derailing slightly. Just trying to get my head around the US concept of kindergarten. In Oz, we just follow with the German concept, where the word comes from. Kindergarten = Childrens garden. We spent a lot of time, outside, running around in a garden/playground.

You live in Australia? Well I guess we Americans aren't up to your standards then. We only have year one in kindergarten.

noooooo, that's not what I meant. I'm trying to understand what "Kindergarten" means in the US. Don't get you knickers in a knot over me not understanding what your meaning of the term is, and just explain it to me.

Is it like year one? Is it like playgroup? Is it a transition thing from some semi structured thing into school? Is it daily? Is it only a couple of days? What is it?

So far, I'm seeing it as being like what we call reception in my part of Australia. A classroom situation, that some kids attend for maybe a year, before they enter their first year of real school. It's more of a thing to get kids able to settle, and get used to sitting at tables, and doing class work, before they actually have to do it (hence why not all kids here do it)

Oh sorry. Yes it is like preschool or playgroup.

Thank you everyone. Today I'm doing the drop off and pick up. We leave in 15 minutes but my niece wants to leave now. Lol. I'm just casually drinking coffee and browsing while she lingers near the door. She is going to have to learn that the school has rules and that school starts at a certain time and you can't just go whenever you want. But I happy she's excited about going.
