Job performance?

Somehow I cannot seem to get my Sim promoted to the top of their career in one lifetime. Even with sending them to work in a good mood, with the right emotion, and doing the daily task, the job performance meter only creeps up a little bit. Does anyone have the same problem? Can anyone give advice?

Yeah sometimes it takes my Sims weeks to get promoted, try doing this while they are at work:

Work hard, and find ways to boost performance. Hacking works well. The Business career has a way to ask for a raise - worked well for me so I could get promoted every 2 days.

Work hard. Watch the performance grow. Fast. They come home tense though. But if that's what you want, you got to pay the price.

Yeah, I always have my sims on the work hard option. But ill try asking for raises. Thanks.

I was more thinking that maybe it was something I was doing wrong, because the promotions and job performance increases are so slow.
