'The Sims 3 has stopped working' - a possible fix??!

First off - sorry if this has already been posted. I googled the issue as it has been c completely ruining my gameplay recently, found a thread and posted on it. Now I can't find it! (I keep getting the 'problem' page when I search and I didn't think to bookmark it).
Anyway, I found a fix which seems to *touch wood* be working on my Windows 8.1 laptop - apparently this crashing issue seems to be happening because of a conflict between OS from Windows 7 onwards.
Right click on the launcher tab on the taskbar. While hovering over the Sims 3, right click. Select properties.
A box will open up - select the 'Compatibility' tab. Tick the box 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' which will open a dropdown box.
I have selected Windows Vista, and so far, it seems to be working. Played for several hours over the past few days and no crashes!
So I hope this is helpful to someone, and once again, sorry if I've duplicated.
